Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have reportedly hit a financial roadblock in their search for a Cotswolds country estate. The couple are seemingly struggling to find the money for the £10 million property they want, one that would put them closer to King Charles and the royal world Harry left behind.
The Sussexes returned to the UK in August 2026 and have spent the past three months hunting for a home in the Cotswolds. For now, they are living on the estate of a wealthy friend. The Daily Mail’s Richard Eden reported on November 2 that the couple, who had been staying in the main house, have since moved to “a property on the estate.”
Now, according to Rob Shuter’s Naughty But Nice, that moves appears to have been because the couple’s search for a lavish house has run into a money problem.
“They have champagne tastes, but the bank balance isn’t matching the ambition,” a source told the outlet. “They want a magnificent country estate where they can entertain, enjoy privacy and live the lifestyle they imagine for themselves. But a £10 million house is simply beyond their reach right now.”
The Daily Mail previously reported that Meghan wanted a home with a film studio and at least nine bedrooms, while Harry wanted a large property with plenty of land, away from areas frequented by pedestrians.

Prince Harry and Meghan Still Own Montecito Mansion

While the UK search drags on, the couple have reportedly held on to their California base. They are keeping the Montecito mansion, which has been valued at around $29 million, and staff are reportedly looking after the property and its resident chickens.
Harry and Meghan first moved to the US in early 2020, after stepping back as senior working royals. They wanted to build a more private life, and later spoke of the intense media scrutiny and the lack of support they felt they received from the royal institution. The couple spent a few months at Tyler Perry’s Los Angeles home before buying their own place in Montecito for a reported $14.65 million.
The property has nine bedrooms and 16 bathrooms on roughly seven acres of gated grounds, and it has been the family’s home ever since. Their daughter, Princess Lilibet, was born in California in 2021.
If the current $29 million valuation is accurate, the home has roughly doubled in value since they bought it, making it one of the couple’s most valuable assets. Whether they eventually sell it to fund a UK purchase, or keep it as a base to return to, could say a lot about how long they plan to stay in Britain.
