Season 2 Episode 4 ends with a bomb exploding inside a barn while Kayce and Andrea are in it, and the episode never shows whether they survived. Kayce pulled Andrea back just before the blast, but both were caught in it, and no deaths were confirmed. Here is what happened, who set the bomb, and what the cliffhanger sets up for Episode 5.

Episode 4, titled, “Blast Radius” builds to a chase at an old farm outside Bozeman. Cal spots evidence of an explosion in security footage, recognizes a likely bomb-testing site, and points the Marshals there. They find Rudy preparing to leave in his van, and he opens fire, is wounded, and escapes into a barn.

Kayce and Andrea follow him inside, hoping to confirm his condition and end the pursuit. Rudy has one last move, though, and he activates a bomb. Kayce pulls Andrea away just before the device explodes, and the episode ends with both of them caught in the blast.

Their fate is left open. Luke Grimes and Ash Santos are both main cast this season, so I doubt either character is gone for good, but Kayce having to shield Andrea suggests the injuries could be serious. Episode 5, Secret Weapon, airs Sunday, Nov. 1 on CBS.

Who Is Rudy Carpenter in Marshals?

Rudy, played by Braxton Hale, is a fugitive and bomb-maker who got away from Cal and Kayce in Season 1. They first ran into him during a mountain rescue mission, and Cal let him go before learning he was a serial bomber who had been missing for three years. Episode 4 forces Cal to confront that failure, since the team learns Rudy may be back in Montana.

Kayce and Belle visit Rudy’s ex-wife, Audrey, hoping she can help them find him. She warns them that Rudy will do anything to avoid going back to prison and always has an escape plan. The barn bomb fits that warning almost perfectly.

The team also recovers a discarded bag containing a broken shotgun linked to Rudy, which confirms they are chasing the right man. Finding him proves much harder, and the trail leads to a local gang called the Disciples, whose members may be helping Rudy in exchange for his expertise.

Why Are Eight Barrels of Stolen Explosives Such a Big Problem in Marshals Season 2?

After questioning members of the Disciples, the Marshals learn that Rudy has access to explosives. They then discover that eight barrels of industrial explosives have been stolen, enough to destroy an entire city block. The episode doesn’t make clear how much of that stockpile went into the barn bomb, so the larger threat may still be out there.

Cal and Kayce disagree with how Chief Deputy Harry Gifford handles the investigation, while Gifford worries about the consequences if the operation escalates. That concern looks justified in hindsight, because I couldn’t see a clear backup plan on screen when the team walked into a property tied to a bomb-maker.

The stakes are personal too. Cal is trying to prove he can stay in the field despite his cancer diagnosis, while Chief Deputy Harry Gifford floats Andrea as a replacement during Cal’s medical leave. That matches what Ash Santos previously teased about Andrea’s season, including her reluctance to step into that role. Her PTSD is also worsening, and she has started seeing members of the Clegg family who aren’t actually there.

Marshals Season 2 Episode 5 airs November 1 on CBS.
