Royal expert Tom Sykes has questioned whether the timing of and ‘s sudden return to the UK has any connection to the child abuse allegations now surrounding her father, Thomas Markle Sr. The couple returned to Britain on August 26 with Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet after six years in California.

Markle Sr., 82, is under investigation in the Philippines after his son, Thomas Markle Jr., allegedly found child abuse material at his home in Cebu. Markle Sr. has denied possessing the images. Meghan has said she was alerted to allegations about her father in 2018 and that her decision to cut contact was made to protect her children.

However, the timing of the allegations and the couple’s sudden move to the UK has raised questions.

“To me it seemed that everything happened in a tremendous hurry,” Sykes said on The Royals Uncensored. “When they left the United States, they seemed to leave at the drop of a hat. We had Harry the other day saying on GQ, it all happened incredibly quickly.”

Sykes questioned whether the couple saw this coming when they decided to return to the UK.

“You know, was this in the air? Was this something that she did not want to be around in the United States for when it happened? You know, if I don’t know, but it seems to me a massive coincidence that this was going on in the background and then suddenly they decide to flee the United States back to the United Kingdom. So, who knows? But of course, you just feel immense sympathy for her, for her family, and of course for any anybody who has suffered this kind of appalling abuse.”

Meghan and Harry have since traveled overseas with their children just days after the allegations surfaced. According to Page Six, royal sources say the trip is down to the UK school half-term break and not an attempt to escape the headlines.

Meghan Markle’s 2018 Letter to the Met Police Is Missing and It Raises Further Questions

Meghan’s own statement in response to the allegations has raised questions of its own. She said she was “deeply distressed” and that a letter sent to the Metropolitan Police and Royalty and Specialist Protection in 2018 was later shared with her. As Sykes read it out on the show:

“It made troubling and disturbing allegations against my father. And, this is the key line, I was given assurances that these were being investigated.”

The Daily Mail has since reported that the Met did not launch a probe into Markle Sr., and that the force is now looking into whether such a letter was ever sent to the Duchess eight years ago. Sykes said the confusion points to a bigger problem for the Sussexes, arguing it shows how thin their operation has become since leaving the institution.

“They’ve basically got one person working for them, overworked, you know, who has pumped out [a] statement this morning presumably at [Meghan’s] direction and now it turns out that actually the police don’t even know where this letter was or what she’s talking about,” he said.

While those questions play out in London, the investigation itself is moving ahead in the Philippines. Police in Cebu have obtained a warrant to examine four boxes of material, including computers and hard drives, that Markle Jr. handed over from Markle Sr.’s former home, the BBC reported on October 29.

Markle Sr., now reportedly in a Florida rehabilitation center after a leg amputation, has called the allegations sick lies.
