Voicing one of comic book history’s most terrifying symbiotes usually requires a battery of post-production sound distortions, but actor Ben Pronsky proved that pure vocal technique can carry the mantle just as effectively.
Ben Pronsky Voiced Venom Completely Raw for Marvel
Speaking about his long-running work within the Marvel animation stable, the X-Men ’97 star broke down the drastic creative shifts between his various turns as Eddie Brock and Venom.
For Pronsky, who grew up reading the iconic 1993 Lethal Protector comic run, landing the role for Disney XD’s Marvel’s Spider-Man was a landmark career achievement that allowed him to tap into dark psychological territory. In that television series, sound engineers handled the alien symbiote by layering audio effects over his recorded delivery.
“In the Marvel Spider-Man show on Disney XD, they did a little bit of playing with the textures and added some stuff to it,” Pronsky explained. “Some… I don’t know exactly what they did.”
However, when he returned to the character for LEGO Marvel Spider-Man: Vexed by Venom, the production team stripped away the digital safety net entirely. Instead of using studio plugins to simulate the alien growl, Pronsky was tasked with producing the character’s signature cadence purely out of his own throat.
“The cool thing with that one is that they didn’t treat the voice at all,” Pronsky revealed. “With the LEGO version, it was just straight voice. It was just doing straight rhythm, which was pretty fun.”
The stripped-down performance allowed him to pivot into a campier, rhythm-heavy delivery tailored for physical comedy without losing the monstrous edge that comic fans expect from the lethal protector.
