Umthetho just landed on Netflix, and within the first episode it’s clear the entire series lives or dies on one woman’s impossible choice. That woman is Mbali Dlamini, and she is not built for the world she’s about to get pulled into.
Netflix’s new South African crime drama premiered on August 14, 2026, and it wastes no time throwing its lead into chaos. Mbali starts the series as exactly the kind of person you’d expect to be on the right side of the law. She’s a sharp, idealistic young public prosecutor with a career built on doing things by the book. Then her past shows up and blows that structure apart.
Who Is Mbali in Umthetho?
Mbali Dlamini is a skilled young public prosecutor whose life is turned upside down after discovering her brother is alive. That brother is Moses, played by Tony Kgoroge, presumed dead for 14 years and now running one of the country’s most dangerous prison syndicates.
Her structured life is disrupted when she’s drawn into the operations of the ruthless prison syndicate led by her older brother, and from there the show forces her to weigh blood against duty, over and over.
The stakes get personal fast. When the lives of those closest to her are threatened, Mbali reluctantly joins forces with Moses to protect their younger brother, Sphelele, played by Given Stuurman.
That’s the engine of the whole series. Mbali isn’t chasing Moses down to bring him to justice. She’s stepping into his world as a double agent, technically still a prosecutor, but functionally embedded inside the very syndicate she’s sworn to dismantle.
Umthetho is the isiZulu word for “the law,” and the title is doing a lot of work. It’s also an adaptation of the Brazilian Netflix hit Brotherhood, translating that show’s 1990s São Paulo setting into a modern Johannesburg backdrop, with the city itself becoming almost a character in its own right.
The Actress Behind Mbali
Nqobile “Nunu” Khumalo isn’t new to carrying a show. Her career stretches back over a decade, from an early role as Cindy in Isibaya to becoming a household name as Hlengiwe in Scandal! and Relebogile “Riri” Diholo in Soul City. More recently, Netflix audiences may recognize her as Precious in Fatal Seduction, and she’s earned award recognition for playing journalist Lucy Khambule in Showmax’s Red Ink.
That range shows in how she’s approaching Mbali. Speaking about the role alongside Kgoroge, Khumalo has talked about the deliberate choice to avoid her co-star between takes so the on-screen longing between estranged siblings would feel real once Mbali discovers Moses is alive. It’s the kind of detail that signals she’s not just playing a prosecutor caught in a crime plot. She’s playing someone grieving a relationship she thought was already over.
Mbali’s arc is really the emotional spine of Umthetho. Every choice she makes ripples outward, and the show is betting that watching her navigate corruption, family loyalty, and her own conscience will be gripping enough to carry all seven episodes. Four episodes in, that bet looks like it’s paying off, especially whenever the story leans into the crime-thriller side rather than the household melodrama.
