Netflix’s Umthetho opens with a lie that Mbali has believed her entire adult life: that her older brother is dead. He is not. He is Moses, and he runs one of the most feared prison syndicates in the country.
That reveal is the engine of the entire series. Umthetho follows Mbali, an idealistic public prosecutor played by Nqobile Nunu Khumalo, whose world collapses when she discovers her long-lost brother Moses, played by Tony Kgoroge, is very much alive and running iGazlam, a ruthless prison syndicate operating from behind bars.
Who Is Moses in Umthetho?
Fourteen years after Mbali believed him dead, Moses resurfaces as a hardened survivor who now runs iGazlam from the shadows. He is not the brother she remembers. He is Mbali’s long-lost older brother, alive and running a ruthless prison syndicate that reaches far beyond what anyone in his family expected.
Mbali’s issues with Moses go back further than his current criminal empire. She was never his biggest fan even before he became a syndicate boss, tracing back to an arrest in his youth after he beat someone up. That history matters, because it means Mbali’s distrust of her brother is not new. It is old wounds getting reopened at the worst possible time.
What makes Moses so effective as a character is how little he needs to do to command a room. Kgoroge does not shout to establish authority. He controls scenes through stillness, confidence and the constant sense that he is thinking several moves ahead of everyone else.
That contrast between physical imprisonment and real control is the whole point of the character. Moses may be locked up, but his reach extends far past the prison walls.

How Tony Kgoroge Built the Character
Kgoroge did not want Moses to feel like a copy of Edson, the equivalent character from the Brazilian original Brotherhood, which Umthetho is adapted from. He wanted something rooted in South Africa specifically.
To get there, he went straight to the source. Kgoroge told the Mail & Guardian that he and the team spoke with men who had actually spent more than 18 years behind bars, including a well-known figure in South African prison-life content, Sylvester Mofokeng. Kgoroge said understanding the mentality and outlook of those men directly shaped how he built Moses.
He was just as intentional about keeping the character local rather than imported. Kgoroge said the team deliberately avoided leaning on the Brazilian version, insisting Moses had to feel like a true South African character with a true South African feeling.
The result is a crime boss whose menace feels lived-in rather than borrowed, which is exactly why Moses is pulling Mbali, and viewers, deeper into his world with every episode.
Given Stuurman’s Sphelele, the youngest sibling, becomes the fault line the entire family fractures around, and it is his safety that eventually forces Mbali and Moses into an uneasy alliance neither of them wants.
