Spider-Man: Brand New Day spends most of its runtime keeping Peter Parker isolated, so its final scene hits harder for how small it is. No cosmic battle, no last-minute rescue. Just Peter, a handshake, and the possibility that Doctor Strange’s memory spell isn’t as airtight as everyone thought.
Since the spell in Spider-Man: No Way Home erased the world’s memory of Peter Parker, he’s kept his distance from the people who used to know him best. Throughout Brand New Day, he introduces himself to old friends under the fake name, Maynard, rather than risk the fallout of being recognized.
The Secret Handshake That Breaks the Spell
By the film’s closing stretch, Peter has been through enough that hiding no longer feels worth it. He runs into Ned Leeds again, the same Ned who spent the movie building a Spider-Tracker app just to say thank you to a hero he doesn’t remember ever knowing personally. This time, Peter doesn’t introduce himself as Maynard.
Ned doesn’t immediately place him, only recognizing him as the guy who once brought flowers to a party. But when Peter reaches out for a handshake, something takes over. Ned instinctively falls into their old secret handshake, the same one that recurred in Holland’s first three Spidey films. A flicker of recognition crosses his face, and he says the name back to him: Peter.
It’s deliberately left ambiguous whether Ned’s conscious memory has actually returned or if this is just muscle memory surfacing on its own. Either way, it’s the first real crack in Strange’s spell that the film shows us directly. MJ gets a smaller, similarly unresolved beat elsewhere in the film, spotted holding onto a keepsake from No Way Home that she shouldn’t have any memory of receiving. Nothing is confirmed for her, but the door is left open.
What The Post-Credits Scene Really Means
The stinger doesn’t follow up with Doctor Strange or tease a new multiversal threat directly. Instead, it stays with Ned and his Spider-Tracker app. The app registers a new Spider-Man sighting in Queens, business as usual, until it glitches. The map zooms out, past New York, past Earth entirely, and lands on a pin somewhere in space.
A title card closes the film: Spider-Man will return.
It’s a small scene with big implications. Rather than spelling out exactly where Peter is headed, Brand New Day leaves the specifics for later, likely tying into the Multiverse Saga’s next chapter. What is clear is that whatever grounded, street-level peace Peter just found with Ned isn’t going to last long.
For now, Spider-Man: Brand New Day ends on hope rather than answers, with Peter finally choosing connection over isolation. Where that leaves him once he’s off-planet is a question the MCU isn’t ready to answer yet.
