Every zombie film eventually coughs up a man in authority who is far more worrying than the shambling horde, and saves its specimen for a Madrid bullring. González Escalona, played by Javier Godino, holds the title of acting president and the moral flexibility of someone who has spotted a vacancy at the end of the world. His pitch to Roberto (Carlos Alcaide) lands like a dropped grenade.

SPOILER WARNING!!!

He arrives just as the rescue team is squabbling over whether a bullring full of trapped survivors is worth dying for. Castro is hesitant, which is the sane position, until González strides in and leads everyone there himself like a tour guide for the apocalypse.

Then comes the bait. He takes Roberto along with the promise of knowing where his father is, a father who played a part in spreading the TSJ virus across Spain and has sat on Roberto’s shoulders for years like a particularly judgmental gargoyle.

Dangle that in front of a man who has spent a whole film hunting for answers and you will get his full attention. So who is this guy, and what does he actually want?

González is the country’s acting president, which sounds grander than it is, because the job came to him the way jobs tend to come to opportunists. After the unrest in the Canary Islands, he courted desperate survivors who had stopped believing in the old authorities and simply wandered into the vacuum. As a character, he looks at a collapsing civilisation and sees a promotion.

Nothing we see suggests he is losing sleep over the survivors. Control is the prize, and the bullring is a handy stage for collecting loyalty. The offer to Roberto reads as a favour with a leash attached.

Where the film stumbles is explaining why Roberto, specifically. Beyond the link to his father and the TSJ outbreak, González’s interest is never properly justified, so a promising villain ends up with a motive made mostly of fog.

Why Did Roberto Turn Down González’s Offer and Does He Survive?

Roberto starts this mission as a thoroughly unpromising human being. He steals valuables, ducks responsibility and chases leads on his father, all while hunting medicine for Pritchenko. Following González was the comfortable choice, and a possible route to the answers he has wanted all film.

Then they reach the bullring and he finds he cannot walk away from the people he came with. Marina and the rest of the crew have been quietly rearranging his priorities, so he swaps the politician’s shiny offer for the messy business of the rescue. It is the clearest sign of how far he has come.

The rescue itself is a bloodbath with a plan. The team devises a clever way to distract the infected, but it costs a large number of soldiers, and things look grim for Roberto and Marina until Pritchenko turns up to haul them out. Thanks to him, most people survive the day.

Zombie stories love reminding us that the infected are not the only menace, and González is the film’s version of that memo. A bite kills quickly, while a leader hungry for control can hollow out everyone left standing. Roberto saying no to him is the film’s quiet rebuttal.

The survivors then claim the bullring as a base and broadcast it as a safe haven, offering shelter to anyone who reaches it before the group sets off for the Canary Islands. A base full of grateful survivors and a politician who wants control look to us like a collision waiting for a date.

Apocalypse Z: New World is streaming now on Prime Video, and no third film has been announced yet.
