Colm Meaney gets only a few minutes as Medusa in MobLand Season 2 Episode 5, yet his sudden exit leaves the episode’s biggest question hanging. Who is this man, and why did Maeve want his head?
Maeve (Helen Mirren) sends Eddie and Gina to Kenmare, Ireland, without explaining the job. Their hotel hamper holds champagne, cheese and a pistol, and Maeve’s phone call fills in the rest.
“It’s time to show me you’ve got the balls to be a Harrigan,” Maeve says.
Who Is Medusa in MobLand?

Very little is known. Meaney plays a menacing Irish gangster who drinks at McMullan’s pub in Kenmare with his crew around him, a sign of real local clout. The episode offers almost nothing about his past or his history with Maeve.
The nickname gets explained at the worst moment for Eddie, with a hot poker in Medusa’s hand. He asks Eddie if he knows why he’s called Medusa, then answers his own question.
“If you double-cross me, you end up in a bridge support or a drainage chamber,” Medusa tells Eddie.
The Gorgon of Greek myth turned men to stone with a glance. This Medusa buries them inside it.
How Does Medusa Die in Episode 5?

Eddie trails Medusa and his crew from the pub to a remote farmhouse. Gina finally realises this trip was never a romantic getaway and bolts into the night, leaving Eddie to go in alone. He creeps through the empty corridors, and Medusa ambushes him and knocks him out.
Eddie wakes tied to a chair with Medusa standing over him, hot poker in hand. The threat that follows is as ugly as it gets.
“Take off your slacks… and bend over,” Medusa tells Eddie.
Medusa tells him this is the easy way, and he is clearly ready to go the hard way if Eddie pushes him.
Then Gina is back, hammering on the window to get Medusa’s attention. His men, alerted by the noise, grab her on the doorstep. Medusa marches Eddie outside to deal with both of them.
Harry steps in at that moment, tipped off by Paul. He fires on Medusa and his men and puts a bullet in each of their heads. The killing is cold and quick, and it is over almost as soon as it starts.

What Does Maeve’s Mission Actually Achieve?

Maeve asked for a head, and Harry delivers several, though none of them for her. The mission pulls Harry to Ireland just as Frankie’s men hit the Cotswolds estate, and that timing is hard to ignore.
Sending the least capable Harrigan to kill a hardened gangster makes little sense as an assassination plan. Eddie has to watch online gun tutorials beforehand, which tells us how seriously the job was ever meant to succeed. I read it as either contempt for Eddie or a deliberate way to draw Harry out of the house.
Harry’s headshots also leave nobody alive in Kenmare who saw what Eddie was sent to do. Whether that was cleanup or coincidence, Eddie now owes Harry his life. Conrad told Gina last week:
“Your father is a wall against the dark.”
The collapse of the Cotswolds estate in his absence proves the point.
And I see Medusa as a test Eddie was never meant to pass. With him dead, nobody is left to explain his link to Maeve, so that answer will have to come from her. I could be wrong, but we’ll find out soon, with Episode 6 arriving next Friday on Paramount+.
