Following the international success of Apocalypse Z: The Beginning of the End in 2024, Prime Video is returning to the post-outbreak wasteland with a bigger, more ensemble-driven sequel, and one major change: the first film’s hero, Manel, is no longer the lead.

continues the story set up by Manel Loureiro’s trilogy, drawing on the second book, Apocalipsis Z: Los días oscuros (Dark Days), while taking its own path.

Apocalypse Z: New World streams exclusively on Prime Video worldwide on Friday, October 30, 2026, in more than 240 countries and territories, just in time for Halloween weekend. The film had its world premiere at the Sitges Film Festival on October 10.

Carles Torrens returns as director, with Ángel Agudo again writing the screenplay. The movie is produced by Nostromo Pictures, and filming was announced in early July 2025, with locations in Barcelona, Lleida and Gran Canaria.

Prime Video officially lists a runtime of 1 hour 38 minutes (98 minutes), making it leaner than the first film, which runs about 118 minutes.

Based on Loureiro’s original 2007 bestselling novel Apocalypse Z: El principio del fin, the first film chronicles the brutal onset of the global outbreak and Manel’s solitary coastal survival.

Manel (Francisco Ortiz), a lawyer, loses his wife Julia in a car accident. A year later he is living in isolation in Galicia with his cat, Lúculo, while a virus called TSJ spreads across Europe. When Spain declares a state of emergency, he barricades himself at home.

When supplies run low, he sets out by sea in an inflatable dinghy and is picked up by a group of Russian sailors led by Ushakov. One of the crew is Viktor Pritchenko (José María Yazpik), a Ukrainian former firefighting pilot. After discovering the crew is robbing refugees, Manel and Pritchenko escape and head for a hospital in Pontevedra, where they find the nurse Lucía (Berta Vázquez), a nun named Cecilia and three children hiding inside.

The group reaches a helicopter and takes off, heading for the Canary Islands, where Manel hopes to find his sister Belén. In the final scene, Belén warns him by radio not to come, as two fighter jets pass overhead. The Canaries, it turns out, are not the safe haven he expected.

Apocalypse Z: New World features a mix of returning fan-favorites and vital new faces, while leaving behind several characters from the first film like Manel.

José María Yazpik as Pritchenko: Returning as the tough, resourceful Ukrainian expat, Yazpik reprises his role as a key combat ally. The sequel digs deeper into his background, pushing his loyalties and tactical endurance to the breaking point as the group faces new human and infected threats.

Berta Vázquez as Lucía: Vázquez returns as the resilient nurse whose vital medical expertise and survival experience help keep the remaining survivors functioning inside dangerous quarantine zones.

Pedrito as Lúculo: The beloved feline actor returns to reprise his role as Lúculo, continuing to travel alongside the survivors through the ruined mainland.

Carlos Alcaide as Roberto: A newcomer to the franchise, Alcaide steps in as Roberto, a hardened addition whose survival instincts are pushed to absolute limits across the devastated mainland.

Julia Martínez as Marina : Joining the expanding ensemble in a key supporting capacity, Martínez helps flesh out the new network of survivors and scavengers navigating the post-outbreak world.

Mónica López as Castro: López joins the cast to portray members of the sprawling network of military remnants, politicians, and desperate civilians encountered on the mainland expedition.

Tamara Casellas: Casellas fills out the broader ensemble of human factions, adding dramatic depth to the shifting dynamics between scavengers and safe-haven refugees.

Santiago Vaca Narvaja, Axel Medrano, Pedro Hernández, and Javier Godino: This group of supporting actors rounds out the wider cast, portraying the various rival human factions and military remnants that view the remaining safe havens as resources to be plundered.

Is the Canary Islands Safe Anymore?

The first film ended with a warning that the islands weren’t the sanctuary Manel imagined. The sequel’s official premise confirms the shift: following the TSJ outbreak, the Canary Islands have become Europe’s last refuge, but supplies are short. A special mission leaves for the mainland, with Madrid as the target, in search of vital resources.

The film’s focus is on the infected, and on the distrust inside the group itselt, with the military playing a bigger role this time, as the main force standing against the zombie hordes.

Apocalypse Z: New World Plot Vs. Manel Loureiro’s Novel

The book sets up a similar structure. In Dark Days, the survivors reach Tenerife and find a military-run society on the brink of civil war between rival governments, with food and medicine running out. Manel and Pritchenko are sent with soldiers on a near-suicidal mission to Madrid to raid La Paz hospital for medicine.

The film keeps the island refuge and the Madrid supply run, but changes the central character, so it is best seen as an adaptation of the book’s setup rather than a faithful retelling.

The book’s final stretch leaves the story open, closing on a disturbing scene that leads into the third novel, Apocalipsis Z: La ira de los justos (The Wrath of the Just, 2011). Because the film changes its lead, expect it to diverge from the book’s events, so don’t assume the novel’s ending is the movie’s.

No. Francisco Ortiz, who played Manel, is not in the cast. Carlos Alcaide plays the new lead, Roberto. Pritchenko, Lucía and Lúculo return.
