Princess Diana‘s brother, Charles Spencer, has issued a sobering warning regarding the true extent of the British monarchy’s institutional reach, cautioning that the Crown wields immense influence behind-the-scenes.
Earl Spencer Cites Princess Diana As He Warns the Royal Family “Has Serious Power”
Speaking during the promotional rollout of his memoir, Swansong, Diana, My Sister, with Entertainment Tonight, Spencer dismissed the common perception that the royal family merely serves as ceremonial figureheads. Instead, he described an apparatus capable of aggressively targeting anyone who steps out of line.
“I think it’s important for your viewers to know the British royal family is extremely powerful,” Spencer stated. “They’re not just these people who put on fancy clothes for state occasions. They have serious power. A lot of control over sections of the media. If you dare to stand up against them as Diana did, forget me, as Diana did, they will try and obliterate you.”
The 9th Earl Spencer‘s assessment echoes the public grievances voiced by Prince Harry and Meghan Markle over the last several years, with the Duke and Duchess of Sussex frequently alleging media collusion and institutional briefing against them.
Addressing the public statements issued by King Charles challenging recollections in his book, Spencer compared his posture to martial arts discipline, refusing to engage with an aggressive institution that views him as an adversary.
“Well, you’ve got a much more powerful enemy, which I clearly have in this set of circumstances,” Spencer remarked. “They would see me as their enemy and I’m not engaged, you see. Let the powerful enemy lumber in and make a mistake. I stuck rigidly with the truth, and that’s a really strong weapon.”
Branding the Palace’s attempt to write off his warnings as “emotional fog” a case of “classic gaslighting,” Spencer concluded by reminding observers that Princess Diana’s legendary strength stemmed precisely from fearlessly challenging that exact institutional power.
