Lanterns’ Biggest Unanswered Questions After Episode 4

Lanterns just answered the one question it spent three episodes building toward, and immediately opened several more. Episode 4, titled “The Weenie,” finally revealed Zoe Macon as the shape-shifting Manhunter hiding in Rushville, a twist that recontextualizes nearly everything the show has shown so far.

The reveal came after a chaotic 48 hours that saw Hal Jordan and John Stewart raid William Macon’s compound, get captured, and chase a false confession out of a decoy before landing on the truth. Antaan’s group of aggrieved aliens gave John that exact window to hand over the Manhunter, or they would level the entire town. That clock is still running.

Why Didn’t John Say the Oath?

The Guardians used episode 4 to make their plan for John explicit. After learning that Hal broke his vows by visiting Sinestro, a Guardian orders John to recite the Green Lantern oath the next time Hal hands him the ring, which would make John the new Lantern of Sector 2814 on the spot. John pushes back on being called weak before finally deciding to go after the position himself.

“The ring’s always been mine,” he declares.

Hal hands John the ring during the compound break-in specifically so John can build a drill, and John never says the oath. He later admits to Hal in the car that he was planning to give the ring back all along, which Hal takes surprisingly well given his own broken promises.

The open question now is whether John still wants the job, or whether Zoe’s death fake-out changed his priorities entirely.

Is Zoe Macon the Benefactor Too?

Will Macon spends much of the episode describing his mysterious benefactor in near-religious terms, crediting the being with curing his cancer and keeping Rushville prosperous in exchange for protection.

He reveals that Zoe was his nurse when they met, which is how she entered the Macon family in the first place. That detail lands very differently once Zoe is confirmed as the Manhunter in the episode’s final minutes.

Hector Hammond’s coerced claim that Will himself is the Manhunter turns out to be another dead end, but it does suggest Will has spent years covering for whoever the real benefactor is.

With Zoe now confirmed as a shapeshifter capable of faking her own death, the show has largely closed the loop on who has been pulling strings in Rushville, even if her exact motive for propping up the town remains unclear.

Sinestro’s warning that Hal will eventually have to kill John still hangs over every scene between them, and neither man has addressed it directly since. With Antaan’s deadline still ticking and Zoe now aware that John suspects her, the back half of the season has far less runway to sort out where everyone’s loyalties actually land.
