Fans waiting on God of War Laufey news finally got their answer at San Diego Comic-Con, and it came with a bonus nobody was expecting.
Santa Monica Studio held a dedicated panel for God of War Laufey in Ballroom 20, featuring the game’s director and cast to discuss what comes next for the franchise. The studio had spent weeks dodging questions about the game’s release window, only fueling speculation that an announcement was close. Physical disc production for PlayStation titles is also winding down by 2028, which added real urgency to the wait.
That pressure paid off. The panel closed with confirmation that development is far enough along to lock in a date, and that this new chapter of God of War is not a standalone story.
God of War Laufey Release Date Confirmed for February 2027
God of War Laufey launches on PlayStation 5 on February 16, 2027. Santa Monica Studio’s official social account shared the date as the panel wrapped, ending months of fanbase guessing games.
The game puts players in control of Laufey, better known to longtime fans as Faye, Kratos’s late wife and Atreus’s mother. Her story unfolds in the Everywhen, an afterlife realm that pulls in deities from mythologies beyond the Norse pantheon, which the last two games explored. It is a chance to finally see the warrior everyone has only heard about in legend.
Alongside the date, Santa Monica’s new head of creative, Cory Barlog, confirmed that a follow-up God of War game centered on Kratos is already in development, and that its story will connect directly to the events of Laufey. The studio described both titles as part of a single connected narrative rather than two separate projects.
The panel also brought out series regulars for a look at the returning cast, including Christopher Judge, alongside newer additions like Deborah Ann Woll, Jack Quaid, and Perlina Lau, who are stepping into roles tied to Laufey’s journey through the Everywhen. Director Ariel Lawrence was also on hand to walk through new gameplay details from the Comic-Con crowd.
Santa Monica also confirmed the game will ship with a physical disc option, addressing one of the loudest fan concerns heading into the panel.
