Physical collectors can breathe easy. God of War Laufey is getting a disc release, and Santa Monica Studio just confirmed it directly.
The confirmation came almost as a footnote. Santa Monica Studio announced a God of War Laufey panel for San Diego Comic-Con on July 24, featuring Game Director Ariel Lawrence and Head of Creative Cory Barlog. Buried under the panel details was the answer to a question that had been circling since Sony confirmed it would end new disc production starting in January 2028.
Santa Monica Confirms God of War Laufey Physical Disc Release
After fans flooded the announcement with questions about the impact of Sony’s decision, Santa Monica Studio settled the matter. The official account replied, “We can confirm God of War Laufey will be available on disc.”
That single line carries more weight than it looks like. Since Sony’s disc cutoff sits at January 2028, any title confirmed for physical release has to launch before then. Combined with Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier previously pointing to an early 2027 window, likely February or March, the math lines up almost too cleanly.
God of War Laufey is the next mainline entry in the Norse saga, picking up right after Faye’s funeral scene from 2018’s God of War. Instead of Kratos, players step into the boots of Laufey, Kratos’s late wife and Atreus’s mother, who has been teased as more agile but no less powerful in combat.
The SDCC panel will feature cast members alongside Lawrence and Barlog to share behind-the-scenes details on the new characters and the performance capture work behind the game.
The timing of this confirmation matters too. It arrives during one of the roughest weeks PlayStation has had in a while, following heavy backlash over the decision to phase out physical discs altogether. For fans who’ve built out a shelf of Norse saga collector’s editions, Laufey may be one of the last mainline PlayStation exclusives they get to hold in their hands.
No official release date has been announced yet, but with the SDCC panel locked in for July 24 and a Gamescom showing likely later this year, expect Santa Monica to start narrowing that window soon, with early 2027 looking more and more the likely release date.
