Episode 3 of Bleach: Thousand-Year Blood War – The Calamity just showed three captain-class Shinigami team up on a single Quincy and barely scratch him. That Quincy is Gerard Valkyrie, and fans coming off that episode want to know exactly what makes him so hard to put down.
Gerard is the Sternritter designated M, standing for The Miracle, and he’s part of Yhwach’s elite Schutzstaffel guard. He’s also secretly the heart of the Soul King, which explains a durability that goes well beyond anything a normal Quincy should have.
When Toshiro, Byakuya, and Kenpachi throw everything they have at him in the Wahrwelt, he barely reacts to it, and that’s not an accident of animation. It’s the whole point of his ability.
What Is The Miracle, Gerard’s Schrift?
The Miracle lets Gerard manipulate probability by taking the collective fear, thoughts, and impossible odds surrounding him and converting his own physical damage into raw size and power.
The more devastating damage he absorbs from his enemies, and the more they despair over how impossible it is to defeat him, the stronger and larger he becomes, which is why he grows more monstrous the longer the fight drags on.
His sword Hoffnung, German for hope, is built on the same principle. Because his blade, Hoffnung, is forged from the collective hopes of others, damaging it is treated as a literal wound to hope itself a wound that immediately rebounds as absolute despair onto whoever caused the strike.
Even a small nick from Kenpachi’s blade sends a disproportionately large wound back across his own body. It’s a defense that punishes offense, which is part of why the captains struggle to land a clean hit without paying for it themselves.
Why Gerard Valkyrie Might Be Unbeatable
Add regeneration to that reflection ability, and Gerard starts to look genuinely unkillable.
Kenpachi slices him clean in half in Episode 3, and instead of staying down, both halves rise, fuse back together through a Quincy Zeichen, and Gerard emerges in his Quincy: Vollständig, Ashtonig form with wings and a fresh burst of energy. His hand grows back the moment Kenpachi severs it. Cutting him doesn’t finish the fight; it restarts it on worse terms for whoever swung the blade.
Earlier in the story, when the elite Quincies first invade the Soul King’s Palace, Gerard’s standard physical attacks initially fail against the Royal Guard. In the anime extension, Senjumaru Shutara’s reality-weaving Bankai completely overpowers him, freezing his body within a specialized tapestry that prevents him from moving or generating miracles.
However, conventional attacks ultimately remain useless against him because, as the literal heart of the Soul King, his body inherently treats physical damage as a catalyst to transform and grow stronger.
Gerard’s eventual fall does come, but not from a sword alone. Yhwach’s own Auswahlen, the ability that can strip a Sternritter’s power away entirely, is what finally reduces him to nothing after Byakuya, Toshiro, and Kenpachi manage to contain him. Earlier in the story, Ōetsu Nimaiya lands a fatal blow against him inside the Soul King’s Palace, a moment fans still debate as either an instantaneous blitz that outpaced his perception or proof that Gerard’s miracle needs a distinct psychological trigger to activate.
That contradiction is what makes him such a compelling wall for Ichigo’s allies to run into. He isn’t beaten through brute force; he’s beaten because the story finally finds the one exception his power can’t account for. Bleach: Thousand-Year Blood War – The Calamity still has Gerard’s biggest moments ahead as new episodes roll out weekly.
