Steven Spielberg’s long-awaited return to sci-fi is almost here, and if Emily Blunt‘s reaction to the script is anything to go by, fans are in for something special.
Disclosure Day marks Blunt’s first collaboration with the legendary director and is set to hit theaters on June 12, 2026. The film, written by David Koepp from a story by Spielberg, also stars Josh O’Connor, Colin Firth, Eve Hewson, and Colman Domingo. It is Spielberg’s first major tentpole since Ready Player One, and his first alien-focused feature in over two decades.
Emily Blunt on Getting the Call From Spielberg
In a recent appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live, Blunt described the moment she found out Spielberg wanted to meet her and didn’t hold back on just how much it meant to her. She recalled getting a call from her agent saying Spielberg wanted to meet her for his next movie, and that she “literally screamed” and was “smothered in goosebumps.”
The meeting happened at his office in Tribeca, where Spielberg pitched her on the film and handed her a hard copy of the script. “But I want you to read it,” he told her. She went straight home, read it, called him back, and cried. “It was so breathtaking,” she said.
In the film, Blunt plays a Kansas City TV meteorologist who is suddenly overcome by a mysterious extraterrestrial force while taping a live weather segment. It’s the kind of high-concept, emotionally grounded role Spielberg has always built his best work around, and early signs suggest Blunt absolutely delivers.
First reactions from critics have already declared the film “Spielberg’s best in 20 years,” with Drew Taylor of The Wrap calling Blunt’s performance “astounding” and suggesting she could be due for an Oscar nomination.
For Blunt, this is clearly more than just another blockbuster. She has called Spielberg her “movie dad” and described working with him as “the privilege of privileges,” adding that watching him direct was like watching someone who “changed the face of cinema.”
Disclosure Day opens in theaters June 12, 2026.
