Spoiler warning: this article covers the full ending of Part 4.

Lupin Part 4 ends on a cliffhanger. Assane Diop is shot and his fate is left open, while his son Raoul, played by Théo Christine, leaves with Hubert Pellegrini after turning against his father.

Raoul’s betrayal comes from years of feeling second to his father’s schemes. Every promise Assane made to him was broken by the next heist, escape or sacrifice, and by the finale Raoul has stopped believing the next one will be different. Pellegrini, Assane’s oldest enemy, finds that resentment and uses it.

In the final episode, Raoul stages his own kidnapping alongside Adèle, the thief who has been impersonating Lupin all season, to lure Assane into handing over the French Crown Jewels. After confronting his father, he leaves by helicopter with Pellegrini. Assane is then shot while shielding Raoul from police fire aimed at the helicopter, and the season ends without telling us whether he survives.

What Happens At The End of Lupin Part 4?

Part 4 picks up four years after the Part 3 finale, with Assane in prison after striking a deal with detective Youssef Guédira. He has dropped the Lupin persona and wants to serve out his sentence and keep a promise he made to Raoul: to go and meet their family in Senegal.

However, then a mysterious announcement signed “Lupin” promises simultaneous museum heists, the thefts go off despite heightened security, and footage seems to place Assane inside one of the museums.

To clear his name, Assane has to escape and put the Lupin costume back on. The hunt for the copycat leads him to Adèle and Juliette Pellegrini, who bring him into a plan to steal the French Crown Jewels from a group of wealthy guardians who intend to keep the treasure for themselves.

Hubert Pellegrini is among them, which turns the job into one more chapter of Assane’s fight against the man who framed his father. That is the setup for the finale. Raoul fakes his kidnapping, Assane brings the jewels, and instead of a rescue he walks into a trap built by his own son and his worst enemy.

Who is Adèle, and Why Does She Impersonate Lupin?

Adèle Kapoor is Assane’s daughter, from his relationship with Juliette Pellegrini. Hubert sent her to an orphanage in England after she was born, and she later went looking for her biological family.

Her Lupin impersonation, built with sophisticated technology, was designed to get Assane’s attention, and it worked. Assane spends the season furious at someone stealing his identity, then learns that the thief is his own child.

I think the choice fits the show’s central idea, which is that Lupin has always been the language Assane uses to be seen, so it makes sense that Adèle borrows it to make herself impossible to ignore.

Why Does Raoul Turn Against Assane?

To understand Raoul, go back to what the show has put him through. In Part 1, a hit man sent to kill Assane kidnapped him on a birthday trip. In Part 2, he was rescued, and Claire refused to let Assane see him again. In Part 3, Assane faked his own death, saved his mother, and then surrendered to the police, partly to protect Raoul and Claire, which meant another long absence.

Part 4 adds Adèle. Raoul watches his father share the kind of warmth with her that he feels he never got, and the Senegal trip, the one promise meant to give him his father to himself, collapses once the impostor’s crimes force Assane to escape. The resentment is understandable, and Pellegrini only has to point it in the right direction.

To me, the cruelty of the choice seemed deliberate. Pellegrini framed Assane’s father Babakar, who died in prison, and is the reason Assane became Lupin in the first place. Now the same man takes Assane’s son, repeating the wound that started the series, and it may be deliberate groundwork for a final season.

The show does not confirm it either way. Assane is shot while shielding Raoul from police fire aimed at the helicopter, and Claire, Benjamin, Adèle and Juliette rush to his side before the season cuts off, with no scene showing whether he survives.

But what he does in that moment says more than the cliffhanger. Minutes after learning his son helped set the trap, with Pellegrini at Raoul’s side, Assane’s first instinct is to protect him. It is the clearest proof of the love Raoul has stopped believing in, and it also exposes Assane’s flaw: he will take a bullet for his son, but he has spent years failing to show up in the smaller, everyday ways that Raoul needed.

I think leaving Assane’s fate open is a deliberate choice. Killing him here would end the story on a loss with no chance of reconciliation, while the cliffhanger keeps two questions alive: whether he lives, and whether Raoul can be won back. Neither can be solved with a disguise or a heist and that is a perfect thread to build the fifth and final part around.

All eight episodes of Lupin Part 4 are streaming on Netflix.
