River Cartwright collapses in the last moments of the Slow Horses Season 6 finale, and the screen cuts out before anyone can say whether he survives. So, is he dead?
The finale, titled “Judgement Day”, sends the survivors to a church to honour their dead after a season that took Coe and Emma Flyte. Afterward, River races to his late grandfather’s house to meet Sid Baker. He sets up glasses for a quiet moment and moves a crowbar off the table before his hands start to shake, and he goes down.
The screen cuts away before we can see him breathe last, and I think that’s intentional. The show wants to keep him alive and the answer lies in books. But the cruelest choice is the staging, since the show gives River and Sid a tender beat right before it pulls the floor away.
What Actually Hit River in the Slow Horses Season 6 Finale?

The answer sits back in Episode 2, while assassins Jim and Jane hunt River and Sid. Head writer Gaby Chiappe, who also wrote the finale, told Gold Derby that Jim spots a small bottle and the crowbar River carried in, and that viewers have to assume he coated it.
“We have to assume that he paints it with what’s in the bottle, which — given that there have been nerve agent attacks elsewhere — it’s a Novichok attack,” Chiappe said.
Jim died in Episode 5, but the poison was already waiting on the crowbar. In Mick Herron’s novel Slough House, it was left on a doorknob at David Cartwright’s house instead, and Chiappe said the writers debated whether viewers would understand what was happening after the change.
Personally, I like the swap, and I think the poison i meant as the Kazan mess finally reaching River, since Diana Taverner has said that operation answered nerve attacks on British soil. River carried the danger into the room himself, so nobody around him could have stopped it.
Is River Cartwright Dead, and What Does It Mean for Season 7?

Nothing on screen confirms it, but the books offer a strong clue. River survives the poisoning in Slough House and returns in Bad Actors, though he is on long medical leave and largely absent from the main action.
Chiappe said the show has not killed, and would not kill, anyone who survives the books. That policy is why I strongly lean toward River living, though nothing in the finale proves it.
Bad Actors is the basis for Season 7, and Apple TV has also renewed the series for a Season 8 based on Clown Town. If the show follows the novel’s lead, I expect River to spend stretches of Season 7 on the sidelines, which would be a real shift for a series built around Jack Lowden.
The stakes are personal, too. Sid returned this season after being presumed dead since Season 1, and Frank Harkness escaped the fight at Diana’s safehouse, leaving two loose threads for the next run.
Season 7 is expected in Fall 2027, so River’s fate stays open for a long wait.
