This Netflix version tells East of Eden from the perspective of its most famous monster. Kazan wanted to expand on the book by digging into the motivations behind Cathy’s harmful choices. She told Tudum that staying rooted in the text of the book was the priority.

The story unfolds in California’s Salinas Valley, where successive generations of the Trask and Hamilton families are destined to reenact the story of Cain and Abel. The timeline stretches from the aftermath of the Civil War to the first days of World War I.

Netflix’s synopsis boils the engine down to one idea: a fiercely independent woman drives a rift between two brothers, igniting a saga across generations.
