What Is Bass X Machina About?

Netflix’s logline drops Bass Reeves into a lawless steampunk West overrun by brutal outlaws, machines, and supernatural terrors. Bass is a father pushed into acting as judge, jury, and executioner, and every act of justice meant to protect his family may cost him the people he is fighting to save.

That tension sits inside a hard-edged action series. Bass has a mechanical arm, and the footage Netflix has shown so far is bloody, hyper-stylized, and kinetic. Henry has described the structure as episodic, a journey in the mold of quest anime.

Netflix screened the first five minutes at Anime NYC, and it opens in a snowy landscape with Bass riding down a train that criminals have hijacked after robbing a cart of gold. He boards hunting one wanted man among a set of , and when a criminal calls him a lawman, Bass corrects the label to bounty hunter.

The confrontation turns into a shootout in a car full of innocent passengers, with Bass picking off attackers carefully to protect a mother and child. A passenger’s thanks triggers a flash of his past, tied to the machine that rebuilt him. He finishes the target by turning his mechanical arm into a double-barreled shotgun while a hip-hop track blares.

How Does the Series Reimagine the Real Bass Reeves?

The real Bass Reeves was born into slavery and went on to serve as a deputy U.S. marshal, one of the first Black deputy west of the Mississippi River. + covered that history in live action with Lawmen: Bass Reeves in 2023, and Bass X Machina takes the same name in a very different direction.

Henry has said he had no interest in a conventional historical series. He wanted to honor the real Bass Reeves while placing a Black protagonist in a steampunk western, a genre he says has rarely featured one.

“The thing that I always say about this show is I wanted to be so damn punk rock,” Henry lamented, as quoted by What’s On Netflix. “I’m interested in the punk rock Western. That’s what I want.

“Because most of the time in Westerns, our visibility is excluded. And I was like, there were a lot of Black and brown cowboys. There were a lot of people who found the frontier, indigenous wise, and we never get to see that. So what I wanted to do in the show is to give an homage to them and celebrate them and also do it in an incredibly crazy punk rock way that you saw.”
