Speaking after the debut screening of the animated short film Optimus Prime Awakening, director Joshua Wassung opened up about what it was like collaborating with Cullen and how the project’s climax unexpectedly transformed into a real-world memorial.

“It was very heavy to hear of his passing, and immediately it just… I go to, without going to spoilers, him walking into the light,” the director shared. “There’s such an emotional moment that we put into the performance… it just felt like immediately it’s almost like the short was designed as a goodbye, but we didn’t know at the time. You know, so there was definitely a sense of almost like, I don’t know, the future was foretold.”

The narrative of the short, which pays homage to the handcrafted aesthetic of the 1986 animated classic, pushes Optimus to examine the heavy toll of an endless interstellar conflict. Cullen, who was 85 when he stepped into the sound booth for the sessions, channeled that weariness into an introspective, deeply layered performance.

“We wanted to show Optimus really coming to grips with… really analyzing his life and what has been this whole battle, this ongoing battle, and what does it really mean,” Wassung explained, noting that the sequence was written simply as an open-ended narrative crossroad rather than a permanent sendoff.

Instead, the image of Optimus stepping toward the horizon stands as Cullen’s unintended farewell to the character he defined across generations, a cinematic exit that feels eerily complete.
