Insidious has always been about people who get too close to The Further and pay for it. Insidious: Out of the Further flips that idea on its head, and it puts the danger in the hands of a brand new character named Gemma.
The sixth film in the franchise picks up years after Insidious: The Red Door, but it isn’t chasing the Lambert family this time. Instead it hands the reins to a British actress best known for a very different kind of haunted house, and fans want to know exactly who she’s playing before they walk into theaters.
Who Plays Gemma in Insidious: Out of the Further?
Gemma is played by Amelia Eve, the actress who broke out as Jamie Taylor in Netflix’s The Haunting of Bly Manor. Eve was born in London in 1992 and trained at the National Youth Theatre before landing roles in The Darkness, Leopard Skin, and The Blind.
In Insidious: Out of the Further, Eve plays a young mother raising her daughter in the same house she grew up in. Gemma discovers she can travel into The Further, the purgatorial realm that has anchored every Insidious film since 2010, and that alone would be terrifying enough. But her power goes further than anyone else who has crossed over in this franchise.
Gemma doesn’t just visit The Further and come back shaken like Josh Lambert or Elise Rainier before her. She can bring what lives there back with her into the real world. That single twist is what separates Out of the Further from every entry that came before it.
Once the demons trapped in The Further figure out what Gemma can do, they stop treating her like a trespasser and start treating her like a door. The official synopsis puts it bluntly: our world becomes their playground. That means Gemma isn’t just fighting to survive one haunting, she’s fighting to stop an entire realm of lost souls from pouring into reality through her.
She isn’t alone in that fight either. Lin Shaye returns as Elise Rainier, the psychic medium who has died and come back across this franchise more times than fans can count, and her presence suggests Elise is once again the one guiding a terrified newcomer through powers she never asked for.
Brandon Perea, Maisie Richardson-Sellers, Sam Spruell, Island Austin, and Laura Gordon round out the cast around Gemma’s unraveling family.
Director Jacob Chase, who previously helmed Come Play, wrote the screenplay from a story he developed with David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick. Jason Blum, Oren Peli, James Wan, and Leigh Whannell all produced, which keeps the film’s DNA tied directly back to the franchise’s original creators even as it introduces a face fans haven’t seen in this world before.
Gemma’s arc looks built to redefine what The Further can actually do once someone learns to use it as a weapon instead of just surviving it. That’s a genuinely new threat for a franchise that has spent six films built around keeping that door shut.
