The X-Men ’97 Season 2 finale does more than set up the next chapter of the X-Men’s battle with Apocalypse. It quietly introduces one of the most powerful figures in Marvel‘s cosmic mythology. The Celestial seen inside the Celestial Shrine is Eson the Searcher, a cosmic being whose history in Marvel Comics is filled with experimentation, destruction, and brutal judgments.

Eson The Searcher’s Connection To Apocalypse
The series begins laying the foundation for Eson’s role thousands of years before the modern X-Men story. In 3000 B.C., the young En Sabah Nur entered an ancient temple and discovered the fallen Celestial inside. There, he encountered Eson and received the Celestial Death Seed, an artifact that dramatically enhanced his abilities and helped transform him into the powerful mutant who would become Apocalypse.
That history gives Apocalypse’s power a different context. He is not simply a mutant who grew powerful through his own abilities. His transformation was aided by an ancient cosmic being whose purpose goes far beyond Earth’s mutant-human conflict. The Celestial’s presence becomes important again in the finale when Rogue, Beast, and Nightcrawler investigate the Ship in the present. Eson’s history goes back to the Celestials created by Jack Kirby during his 1970s Eternals work. The Celestials are ancient cosmic beings who visit worlds in different Hosts, conducting experiments and judging the civilizations they encounter.
Their influence on Earth is especially important to Marvel’s mythology because their experiments helped create the Eternals and Deviants while also contributing to the genetic potential that eventually produced mutants.
The Celestials’ relationship with humanity is therefore complicated. They are responsible for enormous parts of Earth’s evolutionary history, but they have never been particularly concerned with human morality. Their experiments and judgments can result in the destruction of entire civilizations.
Eson is one of the clearest examples of that darker side. During the Celestials’ visits to Earth, he became involved in the destruction of Lemuria, the home of the Deviants. The Celestials viewed the Deviants as a failed or dangerous branch of their experiments, and their judgment eventually led to Lemuria’s destruction and submersion.
Eson also has the power to make that judgment catastrophic. The Celestial possesses immense cosmic abilities, including telepathy and planetary-scale destructive power. His armored form contains vast cosmic energy, while his ability to communicate across enormous distances makes him an especially formidable presence.
His comic history extends far beyond his relationship with Apocalypse. During later Celestial conflicts, Eson survived events that destroyed or severely injured many of his fellow Celestials. He even became involved in the conflict between the Avengers and the Dark Celestials, demonstrating that his story is connected to some of Marvel’s biggest cosmic events.
That history makes Eson’s appearance in X-Men ’97 more significant than a simple Easter egg. The animated series has already expanded its story beyond mutant politics, time travel, and Apocalypse.
