Valerie Cooper was secretly Mystique in disguise, or so the theory went for two entire seasons, until the X-Men ’97 Season 2 finale finally settled the debate. The answer is not what anyone expected.
The theory dates back to the show’s very first episodes. Val Cooper, the bespectacled United Nations official and old friend of Charles Xavier, immediately struck longtime fans as suspicious. That is because in the 1990s Muir Island Saga comics, Mystique actually impersonated Val Cooper for a stretch, giving the animated series a built-in reason to make viewers doubt every scene she appeared in.
Season 1 seemed to throw cold water on the idea. Val turned out to be a genuine human working inside Bastion’s anti-mutant Operation Zero Tolerance, and after witnessing the Genosha massacre, she had a change of heart, even declaring that Magneto was right about mutants needing to fight for themselves. Case closed, or so it seemed.
Every Clue That Kept the Mystique Theory Alive
Season 2 reignited the theory almost immediately. Val was now running X-Factor, a government-sponsored mutant strike team meant to keep mutants safe through containment, and fans noticed her eyes occasionally flashing yellow instead of their usual blue. That is a classic shapeshifter tell in the X-Men universe.
Her behavior added fuel to the fire, too. In Danger.exe, Val fired Polaris for being too aggressive against the anti-mutant Purifiers, and by the Season 2 finale, she had X-Factor on a direct collision course with the X-Men, an outcome that looked suspiciously like Mystique pitting old enemies against each other.
Her fixation on Rogue, Mystique’s adoptive daughter, only deepened the suspicion.
Season 2, Episode 8 seemed to close the book once and for all when Mister Sinister flatly identified Val as human, and a villain with his resources would know. So how could Mystique still be lurking underneath everything Val had done?
She could not have been. The full truth is that Mystique was never Val Cooper at all, not until the Season 2 finale itself.
The Post-Credits Twist That Changes Everything
The finale, “Survival of the Fittest”, ends with the real Val Cooper alone in her office, reacting to a news broadcast that anti-mutant activist Graydon Creed has just been elected president. Another Val then walks in, and the real Val’s jaw drops in horror. That second Val is Mystique, voiced by Randall Carpenter, and she then eliminates the real Val on the spot.
In other words, the answer to how long Mystique was impersonating Val Cooper is barely any time at all.
Every suspicious glance and contradictory decision fans cataloged across two seasons belonged to the real Val the entire time. Mystique only slipped into the role in the final seconds of Season 2, positioning herself inside the American government just as her own son takes the White House.
That timing is not a coincidence. Graydon Creed is Mystique’s biological son with Sabretooth, and Mystique is heard scoffing at his election in that same post-credits scene.
Combined with a Comic-Con preview showing Mystique leading a rebuilt Brotherhood of Mutants against Sentinels, Season 3 looks set to finally give animation’s most notorious shapeshifter the master villain treatment the live-action movies never managed.
X-Men ’97 Season 3 is set to premiere on Disney+ in 2027.
