Veteran actor John Goodman stars as President Compson in Alejandro G. Iñárritu’s Digger, stepping into a volatile political role opposite Tom Cruise‘s eccentric oil tycoon.
Goodman plays a dictatorial, buffoonish, and unpredictable US leader who relies on the wealthy protagonist when a massive ecological crisis hits. As Digger Rockwell (Cruise) triggers a glacier collapse in Greenland that threatens global stability, President Compson ropes him into a frantic mission to clean up the mess.
Rather than handling the catastrophe through standard diplomatic channels, the administration leans into the chaos, resulting in a dark political farce.
What Does President Compson Do in Digger?

President Compson spends much of the film reacting to the unfolding planetary disaster alongside a chaotic inner circle. Working closely with his scientist assistant Ganesh (Riz Ahmed) and his reckless military advisors, Compson tries to navigate the fallout of Digger’s corporate negligence while keeping public panic under control.
Goodman brings his trademark commanding yet comedic screen presence to the role, anchoring the satirical government backdrop. The character serves as a direct foil to Cruise’s larger-than-life billionaire, highlighting the absurdity of modern political leadership when facing extinction-level events.
While early reviews for Digger have proven polarizing, opening to a mixed 53% score on Rotten Tomatoes, critics have singled out the supporting ensemble for adding necessary friction to the film’s sprawling narrative. Goodman delivers a suitably unhinged and blustery turn as Commander-in-Chief, playing effectively against Cruise’s prosthetic-heavy transformation.
Variety points out that while Iñárritu’s ambitious eco-satire struggles under the weight of its own chaotic tone, the back-and-forth between Cruise’s unhinged tycoon and Goodman’s frantic administration provides some of the film’s sharpest, most cynical comedic highlights.
Aside from Goodman and Cruise, the Warner Bros. Pictures release features a massive star-studded ensemble.
The supporting cast includes Sandra Hüller as Emma Rockwell, Digger’s half-sister and business partner, alongside Riz Ahmed as Ganesh. Michael Stuhlbarg plays the Vice President of the United States, and Jesse Plemons rounds out the prominent cast.
