Season 4 adapts Lee Child’s Gone Tomorrow, and it opens on a Philadelphia subway car at 2:18 a.m. Reacher spots a distraught woman with both hands buried in a bag, and his old MP training tells him she is checking every box on the suicide bomber checklist. He approaches her to talk her down, but she isn’t carrying a bomb.

Anna Merrick is a federal employee whose death becomes the mystery that swallows Jack whole. Before Reacher can stop her, she tells him no one can help her now and shoots herself, leaving him shaken by a death he couldn’t prevent.
What looks like an open and shut suicide to Philadelphia detectives Tamara Green (Sydelle Noel) and her partner Shaun Docherty (Kevin Corrigan) gets a lot more complicated once federal agents show up demanding a missing flash drive Anna allegedly had on her.
Reacher has nothing to do with any of it, but his guilt over failing to save her keeps him circling the case anyway, especially once thugs jump him outside the police station looking for the same drive.
Anna’s brother, Jacob Merrick (Christopher Rodriguez Marquette), a small-town New Jersey cop, refuses to believe his sister took her own life. He tells Reacher she was happy, loved her job, and adored her son Ben, who has suddenly gone silent. That refusal to accept the official story is what brings Reacher, Jacob, and Tamara together as an unlikely trio chasing a conspiracy that eventually draws in assassins, federal spooks, and a sitting congressman.

Who Is Karen Kwong-Chip, the Actress Behind Anna Merrick?
Karen Kwong-Chip is a working actress whose credits include the 2025 film Terror Comes Knocking: The Marcela Borges Story, in which she played an OBGYN, as well as earlier television work on I Prophesy: The Future Revealed and Curious and Unusual Deaths. Reacher Season 4 marks a major spotlight moment for her, since Anna’s death is the inciting incident that shapes the entire eight-episode run.
Even though Anna appears in the story for only a handful of scenes, Kwong-Chip’s performance has to land immediately. Her final moments on that subway car need to convince viewers that Reacher’s guilt is justified, and reviewers have already pointed to that opening sequence as one of the season’s more effective gut punches.
Anna Merrick may not survive the premiere, but her absence is what drives everything that follows. The deeper Reacher, Jacob, and Tamara dig into her final hours, the more it becomes clear she was never just an HR clerk, and the season only gets bloodier from here.
