Charles Dickens’ A Tale of Two Cities is getting a new television adaptation, with Kit Harington leading a four-part limited series based on the classic 1859 novel. The new drama brings Dickens’ story of love, sacrifice and revolution to a prestige television setting, with Harington taking on the complicated role of Sydney Carton.

The series is set against the growing unrest surrounding the French Revolution and follows the lives of Lucie Manette, Charles Darnay and Carton as their stories become increasingly intertwined.

The Plot of A Tale of Two Cities

Set in 1782, the story begins when Lucie Manette learns that her father, who she believed had been dead for two decades, may still be alive in Paris. Her search for him becomes connected to Charles Darnay, a French émigré who is arrested and accused of treason after arriving in England.

Lucie turns to Sydney Carton, an exceptionally talented but troubled English lawyer, for help. Carton and Darnay look almost identical but could not be more different in personality, and both men develop strong feelings for Lucie.

Their love triangle unfolds alongside political upheaval, courtroom battles and violence as tensions between Britain and France escalate toward revolution. The story spans 36 years, allowing the series to follow its characters through some of the most turbulent events of the period.

Cast and Release Date

Harington is also involved behind the scenes as a co-creator and producer alongside Daniel West.

The adaptation keeps Dickens’ central story intact while focusing on the relationships between Carton, Darnay and Lucie as the political world around them becomes increasingly unstable.
