Meghan Markle has been accused by a US-based royal commentator of worsening tensions within the Royal Family and contributing to difficult final years for Queen Elizabeth II. Lee Cohen made the remarks while discussing whether Meghan could ever reconcile with the royals, amid renewed attention on the Sussexes’ relationship with the UK.
The comments come after years of public criticism from Harry and Meghan, including their 2021 interview with Oprah Winfrey, their Netflix projects and Harry’s memoir Spare. Meghan has previously spoken about her mental health struggles during her time as a working royal and said she felt unprotected from the press.
Royal Commentator Says Meghan Has “No Chance” Of Reconciliation
Speaking to the Daily Express, Cohen argued that Meghan’s conduct brought unwanted attention to an institution traditionally associated with discretion and duty.
“She brought endless drama, grievance and attention-seeking to an institution built on duty, discretion and service, casting a shadow over the final years of the beloved late Queen.”
Cohen went further when asked whether Meghan should receive another opportunity to rebuild ties with the Royal Family.
“Another chance? The only thing she deserves is permanent exile from the family she insulted so despicably.”
His comments come as speculation around Harry and Meghan’s relationship with the UK continues. The couple stepped back as senior working royals in 2020 and subsequently established their life in California, while Harry has continued to make visits to Britain.
Meghan’s own account of her time inside the Royal Family has been markedly different. During her 2021 interview with Oprah Winfrey, she said that she had experienced severe emotional distress and recalled thinking, “I just didn’t want to be alive any more.”
The broader dispute remains deeply divisive, with Harry and Meghan citing their treatment by the royal institution and the British media, while critics have argued that their public disclosures caused lasting damage to family relationships.
Cohen’s remarks, however, don’t represent the official position of the Royal Family, and there has been no indication that Buckingham Palace has adopted his assessment.
Queen Elizabeth II died in September 2022 at the age of 96, while Harry and Meghan returned to UK last month, though they won’t be working as royals.
