Amazon and Sony‘s high-profile God of War adaptation has hit a major snag less than four months into production, and the fix being floated is one fans have been begging for since the show was first announced.
The Prime Video series, based on Sony Santa Monica’s beloved PlayStation franchise, had already been filming in Vancouver for four months with Ryan Hurst locked in as the lead. Hurst, known for Sons of Anarchy and The Odyssey, was announced in the role back in January 2026. Then, in late June, disaster struck on set.
Dave Bautista Is In Talks to Replace Ryan Hurst as Kratos
According to Deadline, Dave Bautista is in negotiations to play Kratos, stepping in for the injured Ryan Hurst in the Amazon series based on the hit video game. Hurst tore a bicep performing a stunt on set and needed surgery followed by a lengthy recovery, forcing production to pause immediately.
A couple of weeks later, Amazon, MGM Studios, and Sony Pictures Television made the call to recast rather than wait. Prep on the new casting is expected to begin in mid-August, with production restarting in mid-October back in Vancouver. Per reporting from tbreak, roughly four already-filmed episodes will need to be reshot with Bautista in the role, so this isn’t a small fix.
If Bautista sounds familiar, it’s because NSN named him the top contender for this exact job back when the replacement search first opened. Out of five realistic options we broke down, Bautista topped the list, with the only real question being whether he could hold in that simmering, Norse-era intensity for a full season without a release valve.
The physical side of the job is where Bautista has the clearest edge. His wrestling background means he can step into a demanding physical role without months of prep time, which matters given the tight turnaround. He’s also no stranger to Amazon MGM, having appeared in The Wrecking Crew and both My Spy films, with Road House 2 and the Highlander remake still to come. This would be his second series-regular role after See Season 2.
God of War follows Kratos and his son Atreus as they journey to spread the ashes of Faye, Kratos’s wife and Atreus’s mother, with the game’s father-son dynamic driving the story.
Callum Vinson remains attached as Atreus. The rest of the cast includes Mandy Patinkin as Odin, Ed Skrein as Baldur, Max Parker as Heimdall, Ólafur Darri Ólafsson as Thor, Teresa Palmer as Sif, Alastair Duncan as Mimir, and Danny Woodburn and Jeff Gulka as Brok and Sindri. Ronald D. Moore serves as showrunner and executive producer.
The deal isn’t finalized yet, and Amazon has declined to comment on the casting. But if it closes, don’t be surprised if production stays on track for cameras rolling again in Vancouver this mid-October.
