When Travis Scott made his brief appearance in the teaser trailer for Christopher Nolan’s upcoming film The Odyssey, many fans were left confused about the rapper’s involvement in the $250 million epic. Now, Nolan has explained the reasoning behind the casting choice, and his answer reveals a surprisingly thoughtful connection between ancient storytelling and modern music culture.
In a conversation with Time, Nolan explained why Scott was included in the project.
“I cast him because I wanted to pay homage to the idea that this story has always been transmitted as oral poetry, and rap is essentially similar to that,” Nolan said.
Christopher Nolan Explains Travis Scott’s Role in The Odyssey
Nolan’s reasoning draws directly from the origins of Homer’s Odyssey. Long before the epic poem was ever written down, the story was passed through generations by traveling bards who performed it orally for audiences.
According to Nolan, rap music shares many of those same traditions. Both rely heavily on rhythm, memorization, performance, and oral storytelling to preserve narratives and connect with audiences across generations. From that perspective, Scott’s inclusion in the film becomes less unexpected and more symbolic.
This is not the first collaboration between Nolan and Scott, either. The rapper previously wrote the song “The Plan” for Nolan’s 2020 sci-fi thriller Tenet. Scott has also expanded his acting résumé with appearances in films such as Aggro Dr1ft and Gully.
While Scott’s exact role in The Odyssey has not yet been officially revealed, rumors have suggested he could portray Demodocus, the blind bard from Ithaca known for recounting heroic tales through song.
The film stars Matt Damon as Odysseus and features an ensemble cast that includes Anne Hathaway, Tom Holland, Robert Pattinson, Zendaya, Charlize Theron, and Lupita Nyong’o.
The Odyssey will also make history as the first feature film shot entirely using IMAX cameras.
