has built his career jumping out of airplanes and sprinting across rooftops, but his newest project required a completely unrecognizable departure. A full fat suit, cowboy boots, and a prosthetic rear that required intense transformation.

Tom Cruise Clears Up the Rumors Behind His Wild Look in Digger

Appearing on The Tonight Show, Cruise opened up about collaborating with four-time Oscar winner Alejandro G. Iñárritu on the satirical film . Stepping into the shoes of Digger Rockwell, Cruise delivers an audacious, unfiltered performance that host Jimmy Fallon compared to a supercharged evolution of Les Grossman from Tropic Thunder.

“Alejandro… it was so much fun,” Cruise laughed, recalling the moment the director initially pitched him on the character’s radical physical appearance. “This guy comes to me, he’s like, ‘I want you to look like this.’ I was like, ‘You got some cojones, my man. Let’s go’.”

The physical transformation was so thorough that Fallon admitted he couldn’t tell who he was watching 20 minutes into the movie even questioning whether Cruise’s exposed backside in one sequence was the product of extreme method acting.

“Look, I do have—it is a fat suit,” Cruise clarified with a laugh. “And that isn’t my butt. That’s prosthetic! I can do better than that.”

Beyond the prosthetic exterior, Cruise described the character’s voice and temperament as an unhinged comedic outlet that says whatever intrusive thoughts cross his mind. Instead of relying on traditional rehearsal formulas, Cruise approached the chaotic shoot like spontaneous improvisation, embracing the bizarre visual aesthetic to deliver one of the most eccentric performances of his four-decade career.

Digger is set to be released in theaters on October 2, 2026.
