From the very beginning, the Star Wars saga has faced numerous criticisms for its lack of diversity in its early iterations. Despite being filled with numerous aliens, it had too many male and human representatives.
Modern generations of storytellers have led the way in diversifying the cast, yet some of George Lucas’s ideas about the cinematic universe remain the subject of debate to this day. One particular topic is his views on gender roles in Star Wars movies.
Lucas Explains the Lack of Women in “War Films”
In one interview, George Lucas tried to explain the lack of female characters in the original movies. According to him, the saga was always considered a “war film” and, as such, should follow certain cinematic traditions.
To be precise, the filmmaker claims that the casting was done in accordance with all the rules in order to preserve the illusion of believability. It meant he had to adapt the films to the realities of the rest of the world, especially the military aspects of the plots.
The Role of the Plot
“Well, what of Princess Leia?” Lucas famously retorted when questioned about the lack of female representation. He maintained that the plot dictates the characters, and in his vision of the Galactic Civil War, the frontline roles were primarily modeled after mid-century war cinema.
As an example, he asked the audience to imagine what would happen if he chose a woman as Han Solo. Thus, he showed his understanding of how the times influence the creation of characters in war-related plots.
Princess Leia to Appear at Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge
At the same time, the debate over the creator’s vision for the first saga comes at a crucial moment. Princess Leia is coming to Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge, and the first picture of the new attraction was released. From April 29, 2026, fans will see the heroine of the famous movie as she visits Batuu as part of the Age of the Rebellion storyline.
In the series, Leia wears a brand-new jumpsuit and vest. The look seems similar to the character’s “Adventure” outfit from Star Wars Battlefront II. This practical wardrobe option was chosen for the humid weather at Black Spire Outpost. In addition to Leia, her companions Luke Skywalker, Han Solo, and Darth Vader will also become a part of the story.
