Ever since Invincible Season 4 Episode 7, “Don’t Do Anything Rash,” was released, fans of the show are curious about one thing more than anything else—what happens to Oliver Grayson? Given how much character growth we’ve seen over the course of a season, the outcome of Oliver’s confrontation with Grand Regent Thragg is nothing short of catastrophic.
Thragg’s Unfiltered Brutality
There was an attempt by the Coalition to attack Viltrum, as Nolan warned Mark about. Defying his orders, Oliver went against Thragg alone and suffered immensely because of it. During the fight, he saw how little Thragg cares about his kin—the villain tore off his right arm and his entire lower jaw using just his bare hands.
Oliver Grayson’s disfigured body, suspended in the debris of Viltrum, is perhaps one of the most graphic images in the entire season. At the same time, the way the Viltrumite attacked a young and vulnerable person was shocking and horrifying to watch, leaving a lasting impression on the audience.
Despite such a brutal attack, the beloved character managed to survive. However, it came down to barely surviving rather than staying fully intact. According to the final scenes of Episode 7, it’s been weeks since the destruction of the planet Viltrum, and Mark and Nolan are trying to save Oliver’s life.
Injured himself, as he has a hole in his chest, Nolan says that although the injuries are fatal, Oliver survived, and his Viltrumite physiology and Coalition technology are supporting him. There is no indication that he died or that he won’t come out of a coma anytime soon.
Why Did They Decide To Leave Oliver Alive?
It’s hard to say whether keeping a character alive and in pain in a stasis tank helps the plot of the story in some ways. From a narrative standpoint, there is one thing that’s clear—Oliver Grayson is alive, and his brother and father know about it. That means that his existence is a strong incentive for the Graysons to continue fighting.
Mark, having seen the extent of the atrocities Thragg could commit, is even more enraged, which led to the final showdown. Meanwhile, Nolan knows how difficult it will be for them to face Thragg, who knows about the terrible things he did to their kin.
Even though this is probably one of the worst moments of the season, Oliver Grayson may end up helping the coalition. Having gone through everything, he will probably have something different to tell. His fast aging and a different moral perspective make him a great wildcard, which can change many things in the next episodes.
Thragg is on the path to destroy Earth now, but the Coalition needs to regroup after such a devastating loss as Thaedus. With Oliver Grayson still in a coma and Nolan seriously injured, they have to face the new threat on their own. Will he awaken in time and be able to help his brother?
The Invincible Season 4 finale will air next Wednesday on Prime Video.
