Frank Castle makes his big-screen MCU debut in , and his arrival raises an obvious question. How does one of ‘s most violent antiheroes fit into a PG-13 Spider-Man film? The film answers by making Frank less a guest villain than a mirror held up to Peter.

After No Way Home, Peter is alone, with Aunt May gone and MJ and Ned unable to remember him. Frank enters that story as a man who knows exactly where unchecked grief leads.

Frank works as a preview of the life Peter is drifting toward, one with no one left in it. He says as much himself to Peter in the movie.

“You don’t want my life.”

The film backs that up with where Frank lives. Peter visits his houseboat and finds photos of the family he lost, the home of a man who has withdrawn from ordinary life. The story picks up after : One Last Kill, the Disney+ special that premiered in May, so Frank arrives already past the point of hoping for anything better.

That contrast drives the emotional core. Peter still believes criminals deserve second chances, while Frank prefers a permanent answer. Late in the film Frank tells Peter he would never walk away from loved ones if his were still alive, which pushes Peter back toward the people who forgot him.

By then the two have settled into a big brother and little brother dynamic. Frank keeps watch at Peter’s hospital bedside and even dresses in the Spider-Man suit so nobody notices Peter is missing.

How The Punisher Fits Into A PG-13 Spider-Man Movie

Brand New Day is rated PG-13, and it keeps Frank’s methods intact by building the story around their consequences.

He first crashes in during a car chase in his Battle Van while Peter tries to talk him out of shooting his way across New York. When Frank starts cursing, Peter webs his mouth shut. A running gag about Peter once saving Frank’s life on Staten Island keeps surfacing in their arguments.

The turning point comes when a shot Frank aims at Jean Grey hits Peter instead and sends him to the hospital. His methods do real damage to the person he has grown closest to, which gives the film a reason to keep him around. That choice does more than any toned-down violence to make Frank work in a family-friendly franchise.

Frank’s future is still open. Bernthal has said what he wants from the character next.

“I want to see how Frank can serve,” he told Rotten Tomatoes. “I want to see how Frank can honor the dead, how Frank can honor the people that he lost by serving, not just by avenging. I think that we get there with Frank in some lines of the comic, and I want to get there. I want to get there on screen with him.”

Marvel has not announced a new Punisher project, and Daredevil: Born Again season three is in production without his casting confirmed.
