Spider-Man: Brand New Day just shattered the opening night record previously held by Avengers: Endgame, and fans are already asking the obvious question. Is Tom Holland getting a fifth movie?
The honest answer is that nothing is officially confirmed yet, but there’s a lot pointing in that direction. Between the film’s ending, Holland’s own comments this week, and where the character is heading next, there’s enough smoke here to take seriously.
What the Post-Credits Scene Already Set Up
Brand New Day‘s single post-credits scene doesn’t show any actors. Instead, it’s Ned’s Spidey-tracking app pinging a new sighting, except this one isn’t in New York. It’s not even on Earth.
The scene ends with Marvel‘s classic Spider-Man Will Return text, which is about as direct a promise as the studio can make without announcing a title. The likely destination is Battleworld, the setting for Avengers: Secret Wars, since Holland has not been confirmed for Avengers: Doomsday this December.
Tobey Maguire is rumored to cover the opening sequence of that film instead, with Holland’s Peter reportedly saved for a bigger role in Secret Wars the following year.
Tom Holland Has a Plan, Even If Marvel Hasn’t Announced It
While promoting Brand New Day, Holland addressed his future in the role directly on the Happy Sad Confused podcast.
“There’s a whole plan that we have been working on for, I would say, since we finished Spider-Man: No Way Home,” he said. “It’s laid out. It’s gonna change for sure, but I have a really clear vision to the passing on of the baton, and I think it’s really exciting.”
That’s not the same as confirming Spider-Man 5. Holland has said before that he won’t return “for the sake of making another one” and wants any future film to be worth telling. But he’s also been clear that handing off the role to a new actor, potentially someone playing Miles Morales, is the outcome he’s most looking forward to.
For now, nothing suggests Holland is done yet. His Spider-Man appears set to return in Secret Wars, and Brand New Day‘s record-breaking opening gives Marvel and Sony every financial incentive to keep the franchise going in some form.
