The long-dormant wasteland of post-apocalyptic New York is finally stirring back to life. After years of uncertainty, I Am Legend is officially moving forward with a sequel, bringing renewed energy to one of the most iconic survival stories of the 2000s.
At the center of this revival is Michael B. Jordan, who is set to star alongside returning lead Will Smith. With momentum building and key creative decisions now locked in, the project has entered active pre-production as of April 2026.
Director Steven Caple Jr. Joins Michael B. Jordan for the Warner Bros. Sequel
A major breakthrough came when Steven Caple Jr. confirmed he will direct the sequel for Warner Bros when asked by Collider’s Steve Weintraub. Known for Creed II and Transformers: Rise of the Beasts, Caple Jr. brings both franchise experience and a strong creative partnership with Jordan.
One of the biggest shifts concerns Robert Neville’s fate. Screenwriter Akiva Goldsman revealed that the sequel will abandon the theatrical ending and instead canonize the alternate version in which Neville survives his final encounter.
“We’re going back to the original Matheson book,” Goldsman said, referencing I Am Legend by Richard Matheson.
The story will take place decades after the original, in a version of New York City that has been overtaken by nature. Drawing inspiration from The Last of Us, the sequel aims to explore a world where humanity is no longer the dominant force.
Jordan’s role remains under wraps, though reports suggest he will play a leader of a survivor community who eventually crosses paths with Neville. With its mix of returning legacy characters and a fresh perspective, I Am Legend 2 is shaping up to expand the story in a way that feels both familiar and new.
The movie is still in development, and no release date has been announced yet. Stay tuned to NSN for future updates.
