reportedly wants to end his long-running feud with Prince William, but there may be one thing does not want him to do to make it happen. As speculation about a possible reconciliation grows, a new report claims the Duchess of Sussex supports her husband’s desire to reconnect with his brother, just not at the cost of accepting all the blame for their fallout.

According to an unnamed insider cited by HeatWorld, Harry misses William and wants to see his sons “at peace.” The Duke of Sussex is reportedly prepared to acknowledge his own role in the breakdown of their relationship, which has become increasingly strained since Harry and Meghan stepped back from senior royal duties in 2020.

“Meghan understands why he wants to bury the hatchet. She absolutely supports that, but she doesn’t believe Harry should have to throw himself at William’s feet to make it happen,” the insider said.

The renewed reconciliation talk comes at a particularly emotional time for the brothers, with August 31 marking 29 years since Princess Diana’s death in 1997. Next year will mark the 30th anniversary, raising questions about whether their mother’s legacy could eventually provide an opportunity for William and Harry to put at least some of their differences aside.

The key condition, according to the report, is mutual accountability. Meghan is said to believe that Harry can accept responsibility for his own mistakes without taking sole responsibility for everything that has happened between the brothers.

“She can’t stomach the idea of Harry totally swallowing all the things that have been done to them and pretending nothing ever happened. She doesn’t think that’s healthy or the least bit fair…She’s telling Harry that if and when he makes peace with William, it needs to be for the right reasons, with a mutual sense of contrition,” the insider said.

That could prove difficult because the question of who owes whom an apology has surrounded the royal rift for years. Harry and Meghan have publicly spoken about feeling unsupported during their time as working royals, while Harry went considerably further in his 2023 memoir Spare, detailing private arguments and grievances involving members of his family.

From the other side, Harry’s decision to make private royal disputes public has reportedly been a major source of anger and distrust. William has said remarkably little about his brother publicly, although he famously responded that the royals were “very much not a racist family” after Harry and Meghan’s 2021 interview with Oprah Winfrey generated allegations concerning discussions about their son’s skin color.

The brothers’ problems predate that interview. Harry acknowledged in a 2019 ITV documentary that he and William were on “different paths,” while reports have traced some of their tension back to William reportedly expressing concerns about how quickly Harry’s relationship with Meghan was progressing.

Their lives moved even further apart after the Sussexes left their roles as senior working royals and relocated to North America in 2020. The Oprah interview, the Netflix docuseries Harry & Meghan and Spare subsequently brought disagreements that had once remained behind palace walls into public view.

Diana nevertheless remains one of the strongest bonds between the brothers. William and Harry came together on July 1, 2021, to unveil a statue of their mother in Kensington Palace’s Sunken Garden on what would have been her 60th birthday.

Whether that shared connection can eventually help repair their relationship remains unknown. Neither Harry nor William has confirmed that formal peace talks are planned, and the latest claims about Meghan’s conditions come from an unnamed source rather than the Sussexes themselves.

What the report does suggest is that Harry’s willingness to reconcile may not be enough on its own. If Meghan’s reported position reflects the conversations happening privately, making peace would require something more difficult than a single apology: both brothers acknowledging that their relationship did not fall apart because of one person alone.
