If you loved The Hangover or Bad Moms, the people behind those movies have another R-rated comedy coming your way. Spa Weekend comes from Jon Lucas and Scott Moore, the writing and directing duo behind both films, and this time they are sending four longtime friends to a luxury retreat where their attempt to escape everyday life quickly becomes anything but relaxing.
The movie follows Mel, Jane, Sophie and Coco as they try to reconnect after becoming overwhelmed by careers, relationships, family responsibilities and the general exhaustion of everyday life. What begins as a much-needed girls’ trip takes a wild turn when their famously chaotic friend joins them, turning the spa retreat into a weekend of bad decisions, unexpected trouble and plenty of laughs.
Spa Weekend‘s Plot: Four Friends Just Want A Break
At the heart of Spa Weekend is a simple idea: sometimes even the people who seem to have everything together need to step away from their responsibilities. The four friends have spent so much time dealing with work, relationships and family that they have lost sight of something equally important, taking care of themselves and maintaining the friendship that brought them together in the first place.
Their solution is a luxury spa retreat where they can forget about their usual routines for a few days. The women arrive hoping for a chance to relax, have fun and reconnect without the pressures waiting for them back home.
The carefully planned retreat takes a turn when the group’s unpredictable friend joins the getaway, bringing the kind of chaotic energy that feels straight out of The Hangover.
The new arrival brings a completely different energy to the group, and the carefully planned retreat starts heading in a much less predictable direction. Instead of spending the weekend quietly enjoying spa treatments and some much-needed peace, the friends find themselves caught up in a series of increasingly outrageous situations.
That setup allows the film to balance its broader comedy with a story about friendship. The women are not simply thrown together because the plot needs four characters. Their shared history is what makes the trip meaningful, while their different personalities create the friction that drives much of the comedy.
The movie is described as being in the spirit of Bad Moms and The Hangover, which gives a good indication of the kind of humor audiences can expect. It is an R-rated comedy built around adult friendships, messy situations and characters who are old enough to know better but still manage to make some spectacularly questionable choices.

The Cast And Release Date
The central group features Isla Fisher as Mel, Leslie Mann as Jane, Anna Faris as Sophie and Michelle Buteau as Coco. The supporting cast includes Adam Demos as Kai, Kate Lister as Clare, Damian Walshe-Howling as Max and Yasmin Kassim as Allison.
Production took place in Queensland, Australia, with principal photography beginning in early 2025. The movie is produced by Suzanne Todd, John Friedberg and Teddy Schwarzman of Black Bear Pictures, which is also handling its distribution.
Spa Weekend is scheduled to arrive in theaters nationwide on Friday, August 21, 2026. The movie was originally expected to open in early September before its theatrical release was moved forward.
The timing gives the comedy a chance to close out the summer with exactly the kind of ensemble chaos its premise promises. Four friends go away hoping to forget their responsibilities for a few days, only to discover that getting away from real life does not necessarily mean getting away from trouble.
And with this particular group, that trouble is probably going to be a lot more entertaining than another quiet weekend at home.
