Elise Rainier died in the very first Insidious movie back in 2010, so every trailer that shows Lin Shaye’s face sparks the same question from fans. Is she a flashback, a ghost, or something else entirely this time around.
With Insidious: Out of the Further opening in just days, that question finally has a real answer. Shaye is back as Elise, and the film treats her presence as more central to the story than fans might expect.
How Is Elise Back in Insidious: Out of the Further?
The short answer is that Elise never really left. She died during the events of the first film, but remained a presence as a spirit inside the Further, guiding the Lambert family through their plights across the earlier sequels.
Out of the Further leans on that same idea for its new lead, Gemma, played by Amelia Eve. Elise attempts to guide Gemma the same way she once guided the Lamberts, only this time the mechanism is more direct.
An early tattoo parlor scene shows Claire, played by Maisie Richardson-Sellers, channeling Elise to help Gemma’s family, with Elise essentially speaking through another character entirely. Shaye called it one of the most demanding scenes of the shoot.
“That was the very first scene we shot, which was at 4 o’clock in the morning. I’ll never forget it,” Elise recalled. “There was probably the most to talk about in that scene. The ideas of the transference and visiting the Further get set up in that scene. The other actor takes on my persona, basically. That whole section is really about me speaking through another person and her trying to take on my gift.” Lin Shaye.

Why Lin Shaye Wanted to Return
Shaye’s history with this role goes back to before Insidious was even funded. She recalled James Wan and Leigh Whannell having dinner at her house, where Whannell asked if he could leave her a script to read, still just a movie they were trying to get money together to make.
“The next day, I called James, and said, ‘I would love to be a part of it,'” she recalled.
She has also pointed to the ten-minute standing ovation the first film received at the Toronto International Film Festival as the moment she realized Elise had connected with audiences in a way she never anticipated.
James Wan clearly feels the same way about her. He called Lin the beating heart of the franchise, noting that the first film’s role was written specifically for her because he and Whannell were already fans.
Shaye herself says every new installment lets her discover another layer of Elise, since the character keeps growing in her understanding of the demonic world even as she reacts differently to each new threat.
Sixteen years and six films later, Elise Rainier is still the emotional anchor of a franchise that has outlived nearly every other horror mainstay from its era. With Gemma inheriting an even more dangerous version of Elise’s gift, this installment sets up a passing of the torch that could define where the series goes next.
