Selena Gomez has responded to online speculation that she was taking a swipe at Taylor Swift after a pair of social media posts sparked rumors of tension between the longtime friends. The singer and actress says the internet completely misinterpreted her comments and turned an inside joke into a feud that never existed.
The confusion began after Gomez commented “lol” on an Instagram post featuring Swift celebrating an NBA Finals victory. When a separate Instagram Story from Gomez surfaced shortly afterward, fans connected the two posts and began speculating that she was mocking Swift. Gomez has now addressed the rumors directly and insists neither post had anything to do with her friend.
Selena Gomez Says Fans Misread The Situation
The drama started after Game 4 of the NBA Finals, which drew a star-studded crowd to Madison Square Garden. Swift attended the game alongside actress Mariska Hargitay and members of Haim, celebrating as the New York Knicks completed a dramatic comeback victory.
Shortly after the game, MTV shared photos from the night on Instagram. Gomez, a Texas native and longtime San Antonio Spurs supporter, left a simple comment under the post: “lol.”
The comment attracted even more attention when Gomez later shared an Instagram Story that read: “Mad respect for the game!! Congrats to the peeps that represent! What a comeback. So funny how some are all of a sudden fans though lol.”
Fans quickly began linking the two posts together. Social media users speculated that Gomez was criticizing Swift and accusing her of jumping on the Knicks bandwagon during the NBA Finals.
According to Gomez, that interpretation could not have been further from the truth.
“Woke up and was sent so many texts. I would never insult my friends, nor was it an insult,” Gomez wrote on Instagram Stories.
She explained that her original “lol” comment had nothing to do with Swift. Instead, she was reacting to the first image in MTV’s photo carousel, which showed Hargitay looking exhausted after the game.
Gomez also clarified the meaning behind her “sudden fans” comment. Rather than targeting Swift, she said she was joking with friends over a basketball bet.
“Second, I bet my friends on the game. The friends in the text chain I posted,” Gomez explained. “I lost but was poking at my opponents, my friends.”
The actress appeared slightly amused by how quickly the story spiraled online, reminding followers that Swift is not the only friend in her life.
“Believe it or not, I do have other friends in my life. But quickly forget that most assume otherwise,” she wrote. “Also .. It’s a basketball game.”
The clarification appears to have put the rumors to rest. Gomez and Swift have been close friends for more than a decade and have frequently supported each other both publicly and privately. Despite the internet’s attempts to create drama from a three-letter comment, Gomez made it clear that their friendship remains exactly where it has always been.
