Marvel fans have spent months wondering why Peggy Carter would ever come back after Avengers: Endgame gave her and Steve Rogers the ending they deserved. Now Hayley Atwell is finally explaining what pulled her back in.
The pairing of Steve Rogers and Peggy Carter has been one of the MCU’s defining relationships since Captain America: The First Avenger brought them together in 2011. Their story technically wrapped when an elderly Steve returned to dance with Peggy at the end of Endgame, a scene many considered the perfect send-off.
So when Atwell’s involvement in Avengers: Doomsday was confirmed at San Diego Comic-Con, the obvious question became why revisit something that already felt finished.

Speaking with Variety, Atwell pointed to something simpler than plot mechanics or multiverse logic. She described the bond between Peggy and Steve as pure, the kind of connection that can’t be replicated, no matter how big the story around it gets.
“You can’t replace human connection. If, at the core, it’s characters that we’re fully invested in and care about, then we’ll go on that ride,” Atwell said.
That framing suggests Doomsday isn’t just bringing Peggy back for a cameo or a nostalgia pop. Atwell’s comments hint that the emotional throughline between her character and Chris Evans’ Steve Rogers still carries real weight, even in a movie stacked with dozens of heroes across the multiverse.
Atwell’s history with the role runs deep, from her original turn in The First Avenger to her own series Agent Carter, plus stops in The Winter Soldier, Ant-Man, and a version of Captain Carter introduced through What If…? and later Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.
With Chris Evans also confirmed to return as Steve Rogers, Marvel has made clear this reunion is central to the film’s marketing, even before fans know exactly which timeline or version of Peggy is walking through the door.
Given the multiverse focus of Doomsday, it remains unclear whether Atwell is playing the Peggy from the sacred timeline or another variant entirely. Either way, her comments make it clear the emotional stakes between her and Steve are the reason she said yes.
