Steve Rogers is officially coming back for round two. Chris Evans has confirmed he will return as Captain America in Avengers: Secret Wars, and this time the news is coming straight from the man himself.
Evans had long maintained he was done with the franchise after his definitive farewell in Avengers: Endgame in 2019. He did pop back up as Johnny Storm in Deadpool & Wolverine, but his return as Steve Rogers only became official when Marvel dropped the first Avengers: Doomsday teaser. That teaser showed a quieter, older Steve packing away his Captain America suit and cradling a baby, the child he had with Peggy Carter in the life he chose when he stayed in the past.
Now, beyond Doomsday, Evans is confirmed to be heading back into the MCU once more.
Chris Evans Confirms He’s Filming Avengers: Secret Wars
In footage shared by Instagram user @comicconmomsi, Evans confirmed his involvement in Secret Wars and revealed he will begin work on the film in the next couple of months. The clip, which has since gone viral, features the actor in his typically charming but cagey mode.
Evans joked that he can’t hand over Avengers secrets because Marvel is “too strict,” and that what little he can share amounts to crumbs. What he did offer was this: “I can tell you that I start work on the next one in a couple of months. I can’t tell you how much I’m in the next one, but I’m in it.”
That catch is the real conversation. Confirmed in, extent unknown. What his words do seem to suggest is that Steve Rogers survives the events of Doomsday, unless his role in Secret Wars is limited to flashback footage.
Speaking to Empire Magazine, director Anthony Russo gave some indication of just how central Steve remains to this saga, saying, “We can’t see this narrative without his central role in it, basically. The special place he holds among the ensemble, he sort of retains that moving forward.”
That framing lines up with what fans have been hoping to hear. Steve Rogers arriving on the Doomsday battlefield as a father and a man no longer tied to the shield carries serious dramatic weight, and Secret Wars being the culmination of the entire Multiverse Saga only raises those stakes higher.
Avengers: Doomsday arrives in theaters on December 18, 2026, with Avengers: Secret Wars following almost exactly a year later on December 17, 2027.
