Marshals Season 2 Episode 3 showed Andrea Cruz doing everything she could to look fine. She wasn’t. Between the couch she has been sleeping on at the Marshals’ office and the case file on her father’s murder that she keeps reading alone, Dre is carrying far more than anyone on the team realizes.
I assumed her father’s case would stay a quiet side thread for a while, but that no longer looks likely. Ash Santos, who plays Dre, has now teased that the search is about to pull her far beyond Montana.
Dre’s Search For Her Father’s Killer Is Headed To New York in Marshals Season 2

Speaking with Decider, Santos confirmed that Dre’s investigation will send her to New York. According to Santos, someone who knew the precinct where her father worked approaches Dre and opens the door to details she never knew.
“As she starts digging into her father’s murder, she finds that there was an entire situation she had no idea about,” Santos teased. “He was almost leading a double life. It ends up taking her to New York, where she really feels a desperate need to try and get answers and uncover this part of her life that has affected her so much. I think for the fans, it’ll be really cool for them to see Dre go back to New York.”
What that double life actually looks like is anyone’s guess, but I’m already curious how much of it Dre is ready to face. She has been carrying her father’s death since childhood, and a trip back to the city where it all began could shake her more than any case the Marshals have worked.
The search is already taking a toll. In Episode 3, Dre admitted she’s looking into the case, froze when Belle approached the basement of a rental, and was shown sleeping at the office because she no longer feels safe at home. Santos said the character is only now processing the trauma of the Cleggs, the kidnapping, and Garrett’s death, and that Showrunner Spencer Hudnut’s reveal about the office sleeping broke her heart.

The New York storyline also hits close to home for Santos. Her father spent more than 25 years with the NYPD, most of it as an SVU detective in Manhattan, and Dre is also from the Bronx. Santos said the overlap gives her so much to work with that the line between actress and character barely exists, which makes me think we’re in for some of her most personal work yet.
“The other day we were filming this scene on the water, and we were looking at the Manhattan skyline in Dumbo under the Brooklyn Bridge, and it’s so beautiful. It was an emotional scene,” Santos said. “Then afterwards, Luke [Grimes]’s assistant was like, ‘Is it hard for you to cry?’ I was like, ‘With this? No, because I almost feel like there are parts of me where I just am her.’ The separation isn’t really there. It’s interesting. “
Some release is coming too. Santos teased that Dre finally cries over her father’s death, something we never saw at his funeral, and she does it in the arms of someone she trusts. She did not say who, and I’d love to know whether the answer is Belle or someone closer to the case.
Meanwhile, Cal’s cancer treatment adds pressure. He turns to Dre for a leadership role, but she is reluctant, and the only person she confides in is Kayce, which strains their dynamic.
With Dre heading to New York and Cal’s illness reshaping the team, the next few weeks could be the heaviest of the season. Marshals airs new episodes on Sundays on CBS, with episode 4 set for October 25.
