Alfred Molina has played Doctor Otto Octavius twice across two very different eras of Spider-Man cinema, and if Marvel comes calling again, he’s already given his answer.
The 73-year-old first strapped on those iconic mechanical arms opposite Tobey Maguire in Sam Raimi’s ‘Spider-Man 2’ back in 2004, a performance widely regarded as one of the best villain turns in comic book movie history. Seventeen years later, he reprised the role in ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’ and picked up right where he left off, without missing a single beat.
Fans lost their minds. And now, with ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ swinging into theaters on July 31, 2026, the question of Doc Ock’s future in the MCU is louder than ever.
Alfred Molina on a Potential Doc Ock Return in the MCU
In a new interview with Variety, Molina addressed the possibility head-on and left absolutely zero ambiguity about where he stands.
“I think we might have to just leave Doc Ock in a nice prominent place in the rogue’s gallery of villains,” he said, “but honestly, if they came knocking on my door and said we’d love you to do it again, I would do it again, no doubt.”
No doubt. Two words that say everything. Molina also revealed that Marvel originally signed him to a three-movie option for the role, adding an interesting contractual wrinkle to the conversation. With No Way Home counting as only his second outing, there may still be a door open on paper, and now clearly in spirit.
The tricky part is the storytelling puzzle. Doc Ock’s arc in No Way Home ended on a note of full redemption, his mind freed from the corrupted AI in his tentacles thanks to Peter Parker. Molina himself has previously acknowledged that tension, noting the challenge of bringing back a character who has already found his way back to being a decent person. But the MCU has never let a clean ending get in the way of a great return, and with the multiverse still very much in play, the creative options are anything but limited.
Kevin Feige himself once admitted that “you can’t get better than Alfred Molina as Doc Ock,” and nothing about Molina’s No Way Home performance suggested that statement has aged a day.
‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ opens in theaters worldwide on July 31, 2026.
