has intensified his public confrontation with Buckingham Palace, accusing of deploying “classic gaslighting” to undermine the shocking revelations shared in his memoir, Swansong, Diana, My Sister.

Charles Spencer Slams the King Charles’ Over Denying Memoir Claims

The dispute centers on a confrontation between Spencer and the then-Prince of Wales over the arrangements for Princess Diana’s 1997 funeral. Spencer adamantly objected to forcing and to walk behind their mother’s coffin, leading to a fiery phone call where Charles allegedly delivered an unforgettable five-word dismissal:

“He had a good old rant at me when I said, ‘I really don’t think that’s a good idea,'” Spencer recounted. “And then he sort of summoned himself up and said what I call those five words: ‘We’ll forget her soon enough.’ And I was so surprised by that that I was stunned. I said, ‘I can’t believe you just said that’, and hung up on him.”

The claim provoked a rare official reaction from the Palace, which suggested that “paternal grief can cloud reason and color memory”.

However, Spencer refused to accept the Palace’s explanation, arguing that dodging a direct denial while questioning his mental state was a textbook institutional deflection.

“It was interesting to me when the King made his public statement, there was no denial,” Spencer stated. “It was just the classic gaslighting of, ‘Maybe his memory is not right, or maybe he’s too emotional,’ or whatever. That’s pretty insulting, actually. My family’s quite stubborn, you could see that in Diana. Being falsely accused is really upsetting.”

Comparing the ongoing public duel to martial arts, Spencer noted that he views the monarchy as a “much more powerful enemy” lumbering into strategic mistakes. By grounding his account strictly in the truth, Spencer insisted that no amount of palace spin will erase his sister’s impact or rewrite the past.
