Selena Gomez recently signed her name to her most interesting project yet, and anyone who’s followed her acting career knows the exact reason why she decided to take part in this one.
Variety has confirmed that Gomez is set to appear in Brady Corbet’s still-untitled next feature, alongside Michael Fassbender and Cate Blanchett, in what promises to be one of the most exciting films of the coming years.
The casting news first broke via The InSneider, but Blanchett herself unintentionally confirmed the production while participating in a masterclass at the Cannes Film Festival over the weekend.
Selena Gomez Stars in X-Rated Brady Corbet Film With Michael Fassbender and Cate Blanchett
Very few details are available about the upcoming movie right now, except that Brady Corbet has described the production as genre-defying, X-rated, and mainly set in the 1970s. What’s more, it’s apparently going to span from the 19th century to the present day.
Moreover, Corbet has mentioned that his latest project will focus on American mysticism and the origins of cult movements, claiming that he’s “been reading tons and tons of material about the migration of cult belief systems and structures.”
The film will be shot using the extraordinarily rare eight-perf 65mm cameras, and plans include writing an unprecedented 200-page script and completing a 50-day shooting schedule across Portugal and South Africa.
Gomez was obviously looking to take on a similar challenge. For instance, she recently spoke about having a list of people she would like to work with and her willingness to fight for roles that mean something to her, as she did with Emilia Pérez.
Moreover, she stated that she’d rather have four scenes in a Scorsese film than star in a typical leading role, and that’s exactly the kind of opportunity Brady Corbet represents, especially considering that The Brutalist, his latest work, earned him an Oscar nomination.
The actress’s preference for working with auteurs over franchises is nothing new. First of all, she quickly transitioned from Wizards of Waverly Place to Spring Breakers, calling it “such a crazy detour.” Then there was Emilia Pérez, a Spanish-language musical crime film directed by Jacques Audiard that earned her the Cannes Best Actress prize alongside her fellow cast members.
As she told The Hollywood Reporter, she considers both productions to be among “the best experiences that I’ve had on a set since Spring Breakers.”
Brady Corbet’s still-untitled next feature is surely going to be the same kind of project she’s been looking for, and while pre-production has already begun, a release date has not yet been specified.
