is gearing up to celebrate his first wedding anniversary with , but marking the milestone comes with an unappetizing culinary catch.

How Selena Gomez’s Nana Forced Benny Blanco Into a Bizarre Tradition

Appearing on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, Blanco revealed that Gomez’s grandmother personally instructed him to follow a longstanding superstition at their wedding reception: freezing a slice of their wedding cake to eat exactly one year later for good luck.

“Her grandma told me that we’re supposed to eat cake from, like, a year ago,” Blanco explained. “At the end of our wedding, her grandma said, ‘You need to save this cake. You got to grab the cake. You got to freeze it. It’s good luck to eat it’.”

While saving the top tier of a wedding cake is a common marriage tradition meant to bring prosperity, Blanco confessed that his preservation skills left much to be desired. Instead of vacuum-sealing the dessert, he quickly wrapped it up and tossed it into the freezer in an ordinary bag.

“I did not freeze it well. Like, there might be fur on it. Like, it wasn’t a good freeze job,” Blanco admitted to Fallon. “I have a feeling it’s gonna look like strawberries when you leave them in the back of the fridge for too long and they’re just, like, white… You take the fur off, and then you have the cake.”

Despite the less-than-ideal storage, Blanco noted he still intends to honor the family superstition as their anniversary approaches on the 27th. When Fallon suggested blending the aged pastry into ice cream to make it palatable, Blanco pushed back on trying to dress it up.

“You can’t do anything fun with year-old cake,” Blanco joked, confirming he plans to scrape off the freezer burn and take a small bite purely for the sake of the tradition.
