King Charles III showed he’s “prepared for war” with Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, and it didn’t take a public statement to prove it, believes Royal insider Rob Shutter.
Instead of a press conference or a pointed interview, the King made his position clear through a single letter issued through Lord Chamberlain, one that reportedly left the Sussexes stunned by just how far Buckingham Palace was willing to go.

King Charles branded Harry and Meghan as “private citizens” in a letter that has since become the talk of royal circles.
Shuter claimed palace power players deliberately moved to “nip” things in the bud before Harry, 41, and Markle, 45, could start playing royal again following their return to the UK.
He didn’t hold back when describing the reaction inside the couple’s camp.
“What is shocking to them is that the king finally got a backbone and said something. They thought they were going to slip back into Britain and do whatever they want,” he said during an appearance on Maureen Callahan’s podcast, The Nerve.
Shuter argued the timing of the letter was no accident, framing it as a direct response to fears that Harry and Meghan intended to blur the line between private life and royal business now that they’re back on British soil.
The letter itself, sent on behalf of the King by the Lord Chamberlain, was circulated to government departments, the military, and Lord-Lieutenants across the UK, along with Harry’s own team.
It reiterated that the Duke and Duchess stepped down from royal duties back in January 2020 and remain, in the Palace’s words, “private citizens with commercial and charitable interests.” A spokesperson for the couple told reporters Harry and Meghan were “surprised” by the letter’s tone and timing.
Shuter went further, tying the moment to a broader philosophy he says has defined the monarchy for generations.
“The royals have a long history of carrying on,” he said. “Just don’t complain. Carry on. Do your duty. And I think Harry and Meghan knew this and were willing to exploit it, and are shocked that, for the first time in a long time, the king finally has a spine. The king finally stood up.”
That framing puts the blame squarely on Harry and Meghan for allegedly counting on royal restraint to work in their favor.
With the Sussexes now settled back in Britain after six years away, and Harry’s own security arrangements reportedly still under review, this letter may only be the opening move.
However, according to a source who spoke to People, the top priority for the couple since their return has been their children.
“Everything else will fall into place when the time is right,” the source added.
