, the actor best known for playing Eddie King Jr. in , has passed away at the age of 70. His wife, Susan Wright, confirmed his death on Saturday. No cause of death has been disclosed.

Wright’s performance in Robert Townsend’s 1991 musical drama remains one of the most memorable roles of his career, but it was far from his only standout performance. Over several decades, he moved between war dramas, science fiction, crime films and some of television’s most acclaimed dramas.

His career included roles that showed a very different side of the actor, from the volatile recruit he played early on in Streamers to the troubled inmate he portrayed on HBO’s Oz. Here are five performances that deserve to be remembered alongside Eddie King Jr.

1. Carlyle In ‘Streamers’ (1983)

Wright’s role in Robert Altman’s Streamers came early in his career and immediately showed how much intensity he could bring to a character.

The film, adapted from David Rabe’s play, follows a group of soldiers stationed at an Army barracks during the Vietnam War, with Wright playing Carlyle, a volatile recruit whose presence adds another layer of tension to the increasingly hostile environment.

The performance required Wright to portray a character whose anger and alienation could quickly turn dangerous. He shared the Volpi Cup for Best Actor at the Venice Film Festival with his Streamers ensemble castmates, marking an early recognition of his talent.

2. Elias Taylor In ‘V’ (1983–1985)

Wright moved into science fiction with the original V miniseries, playing Elias Taylor, a former criminal who becomes involved with the human resistance against the seemingly friendly extraterrestrial visitors who have arrived on Earth.

He continued the role through V: The Final Battle and V: The Series. In a franchise built around aliens, spaceships and an impending war for humanity, Wright gave Elias a grounded quality that helped make the character feel connected to the people caught in the middle of the conflict.

3. Victor Duncan In ‘The Principal’ (1987)

Wright took on a very different kind of threat in The Principal, starring opposite Jim Belushi. He played Victor Duncan, the intimidating leader of a school gang that effectively controls the campus.

The role gave Wright the opportunity to lean into a colder and more menacing presence. Victor is not simply another obstacle for the film’s protagonist. His control over the school’s students creates much of the danger that the story has to overcome, and Wright’s performance gives the character the authority of someone accustomed to getting his way.

4. Raynathan “Ray” Skuggs In ‘Sugar Hill’ (1994)

Wright reunited with crime drama for Sugar Hill, where he played Raynathan “Ray” Skuggs opposite Wesley Snipes. The two portray brothers involved in Harlem’s drug trade, although they have very different ideas about the life they have built.

Ray remains deeply tied to the criminal world while his brother begins questioning whether he wants to continue down the same path. Wright gives Ray a tragic edge, portraying someone who is already too deeply invested in the violence around him to imagine an easy way out.

5. Omar White In ‘Oz’ (2001–2003)

Wright brought that same intensity to HBO’s Oz as Omar White, a recurring character introduced during the show’s later seasons. White is a troubled, drug-addicted inmate whose unpredictable behavior makes him one of the prison’s more volatile personalities.

The role allowed Wright to explore addiction, desperation and self-destruction without reducing White to a simple villain. His performance captured a man repeatedly trying to regain control of his life while falling back into the same destructive patterns.

Together, these performances show why Wright’s career extended far beyond Eddie King Jr. The Five Heartbeats may remain his signature role, but his work across film and television gave audiences plenty of other performances worth revisiting.

Wright’s career earned recognition early on, with his work in Streamers contributing to the ensemble’s Volpi Cup for Best Actor at the Venice Film Festival. He went on to build a diverse filmography across drama, science fiction, crime and television, with performances in The Five Heartbeats, V, Sugar Hill and Oz becoming some of his most enduring credits.

While Eddie King Jr. remains the role most closely associated with him, Wright’s body of work showcased a range that extended well beyond that performance, and his contributions to film and television will be remembered across the industry.
