Jean Grey is officially in the MCU. Whether she’s showing up in Avengers: Doomsday this December is a different question entirely.
Spider-Man: Brand New Day confirmed months of fan speculation when Sadie Sink‘s mystery role turned out to be Jean Grey, the founding X-Man and future host of the Phoenix Force.
Director Destin Daniel Cretton even revealed he specifically asked Marvel to work her into the film, telling press it was “not a mandate, it was a request.” He wanted a teenage telepath who could mirror Peter Parker’s loneliness, and Jean fit the bill.
That casting reveal immediately raised the obvious follow-up. Avengers: Doomsday is already stacked with returning X-Men actors from the Fox era, so where does the newest Jean Grey fit into that lineup?
Why Fans Expected Sadie Sink In ‘Avengers: Doomsday’
Avengers: Doomsday has confirmed a small army of Fox veterans reprising their roles, including Patrick Stewart’s Professor X, Ian McKellen’s Magneto, James Marsden’s Cyclops, Rebecca Romijn’s Mystique, Alan Cumming’s Nightcrawler, Kelsey Grammer’s Beast, and Channing Tatum’s Gambit. With Cyclops already locked in, fans assumed his other half would follow.
Jean Grey’s absence from that list stands out even more once you factor in original Jean actress Famke Janssen, who is also sitting out Doomsday. Janssen didn’t hide her frustration about it, saying plainly that Marvel “made a mistake,” while adding she’s “ready to show you some Phoenix, some very dark Phoenix” if the studio ever calls.
So, Where Is Sink’s Jean Grey Actually Headed?
As of now, Sink has not been officially announced for Avengers: Doomsday. Every confirmed detail about her future points somewhere else entirely.
Kevin Feige has said Jean will play a “key role” in the future of the MCU, and multiple reports indicate that role plays out in Avengers: Secret Wars rather than Doomsday. A Deadline report even suggested Sink would be filming Secret Wars scenes sometime in 2026, timing that lines up with the sequel’s production schedule.
The theory tracks with how Brand New Day actually left her story. Jean, seen in the film as Sara Grey before the swap is revealed, is spotted boarding a bus out of New York City in the movie’s final stretch, a detail plenty of fans read as her heading off to find Professor X rather than gearing up for a Doctor Doom fight already crowded with mutant heroes. Introducing her fully formed in Doomsday would also mean skipping past the mystery Marvel spent an entire press tour protecting.
There’s a narrative logic to holding her back, too. Doomsday leans on the nostalgia of the Fox X-Men returning as a unit. Secret Wars, by contrast, is shaping up to be the movie that fully pushes the MCU into its mutant era, making it a more natural stage for Sink’s Jean to step forward as a lead rather than another face in an ensemble battle.
